geography

history

Azinhaga was probably founded in Moorish times, its name means in Arabic roughly "narrow way" or "narrow passage". The town received its town charter ("Foral") from King Sancho II at the beginning of the 13th century. Especially in the time of the royal prime minister Marquês de Pombal (1699–1782), many of the tributaries and tributaries of the Tagus were diverted and the area of Azinhaga drained, so that the reason for the Arabic naming ceased to exist and Azinhaga became part of what is now wide, for agriculture , Cattle and horse breeding suitable area. Troops from the French invading army caused considerable damage at the beginning of the 19th century. Since 1895 Azinhaga has belonged to the then newly created circle (concelho) of Golegã, and no longer to the concelho of Santarém, to which it always belonged before.
