Azinhal is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district ( concelho ) of Castro Marim , in the Algarve . It has 522 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

Azinhal Parish Church

history

According to the history of the entire district, Azinhal was probably also a prehistoric settlement area before it became part of the Roman province of Lusitania . After the invasion of Germanic tribes in the 5th century AD, the Moors conquered the area in the early 8th century. In the course of the Reconquista , Paio Peres Correia conquered the current district of Castro Marim in 1242 , under King D.Afonso III. first gave town rights in 1277 .

In the 18th century, Azinhal became an independent municipality.
