Azra Bašić

Azra Bašić, born Alešević (born June 22, 1959 in Rijeka , FV Yugoslavia ) is a Bosniak - Croatian war criminal . As a guard of the Derventa prison camp and a member of a paramilitary unit subordinate to the Croatian Hrvatsko vijeće obrane (HVO), she committed war crimes and crimes against humanity , including the torture and murder of Serb civilians in the camp in Derventa , in the to about 400 people were interned. An international arrest warrant had been available from Interpol since 2006 accusing Bašić of war crimes. After evading arrest for several years, she was arrested in the United States in 2011 . She was delivered to Bosnia-Herzegovina at the end of 2016 . On December 27, 2017, a court in Sarajevo sentenced her to 14 years' imprisonment.

Azra Bašić became notorious as "Azra with the two knives" for the crimes she was accused of in the Derventa camps. In 2011, after a long manhunt in the USA , she was arrested in the city of Stanton 45 kilometers from Lexington in Kentucky and charged with war crimes. According to the US court records, she is said to have committed grave atrocities and brutally murdered at least one man. She then allegedly forced other prisoners to drink the corpse's blood. She is also said to have forced prisoners to drink gasoline. She is said to have set an internee alive.

After Bosnian authorities identified Azra Bašić on the basis of lengthy forensic investigations, document verification and testimony in 2001, charges began against Bašić. The FBI and Interpol located Bašić in 2004 and issued an international arrest warrant against her in 2006. In 2007, the US received a formal extradition request from the Bosnian government following a complaint to the US federal court. After further evidence was submitted to the federal court, Bašić was arrested in 2011. She has been under arrest ever since . She was delivered to Bosnia-Herzegovina at the end of 2016. Her trial began in Sarajevo in January 2017.

As a former member of the Croatian military, Bašić was sentenced to 14 years in prison on December 27, 2017 for war crimes in the conflict in Bosnia. The court in the Bosnian capital Sarajevo found her guilty of having committed crimes against Bosnian Serb civilians in northern Bosnia in April 1992.
