The civil works eG is a German green power - suppliers and a network of community energy companies . As an umbrella organization of energy cooperatives, Bürgerwerke bundles green electricity from local generation and thus supplies households and companies throughout Germany and also supplies green gas. This makes them the largest alliance of energy cooperatives in Germany. The Bürgerwerke take on all energy-related tasks for the member cooperatives, such as energy procurement, the switching process and customer service.

Companies

The Bürgerwerke supply green electricity, which is generated by its member companies using solar and wind energy as well as in the Bavarian hydropower station Töging . Around 15 percent of the electricity comes from citizen solar and wind turbines. The profits from electricity sales are reinvested in local energy transition projects by the energy cooperatives.

The electricity is certified as green electricity by TÜV Nord and the Grüner Strom label . The electricity tariff is recommended by the environmental protection organization Robin Wood and the sustainability platform Utopia.de .

The aim of the Bürgerwerke is the regionalization of the energy supply and an energy turnaround from below. The company was founded on December 13, 2013 and is known as “ one of Europe's most innovative electricity retail start-ups ” (German: “ one of Europe's most innovative electricity provider startups”).

Other fields of activity

In addition to green electricity, the Bürgerwerke also supply so-called BürgerEkogas for heating and cooking to households and companies. The green gas optionally has a biogas share of 5, 10 or 100%. The biogas is obtained from organic waste that arises from the processing of sugar beet in a sugar beet factory in Mecklenburg- Vorommern. By purchasing BürgerÖkogas, every customer supports the energy transition in citizen hands with a subsidy of 0.3 cents per kilowatt hour.

The Bürgerwerke offer citizens' energy companies a platform for exchange and knowledge transfer so that new business models for the energy transition can be disseminated regionally. The experiences of individual member cooperatives are passed on in joint workshops, for example on the topics of setting up a charging station network for electric cars, tenant electricity models or the joint planning and financing of renewable energy systems.

The Bürgerwerke cooperate with Renault Germany to promote the sale of electric cars. The buying community through the member companies allows a discount from the list price of the electric cars Renault ZOE and Renault Kangoo .

Number and facilities of members

As of June 2020, 97 citizens' energy companies are members. They represent over 15,000 members and have over 450 systems across Germany with an installed capacity of 26 megawatts . These produce electricity for around 13,000 households.
