BAW Institute for Regional Economic Research
BAW Institute for Regional Economic Research was a Bremisches Research Institute of Regional Economics .
history
It was founded in 1947 under the name "Bremen Committee for Economic Research" (BAW) by the Bremen Senate . Emerging from a department in the economic department, it was one of the first economic research institutes in Germany . Since 2005 the institute has been organized privately. The Bremen Senate continues to hold 25% through the WFB ( Bremen Economic Development Agency ), the Sparkasse Bremen 39.8%, the Sparkasse Bremerhaven 10.2%, 25% are held by other entrepreneurs from Bremen through the BAW-Beteiligungsgesellschaft.
The BAW sees itself as a regional economic competence center in the north of Germany, since since 2004 the volume of state contracts of the Senate has not been enough to finance the institute alone. The institute became known for its positive reports on major Bremen projects, especially space parks , music theaters and racecourses .
Already under Frank Haller, the institute oriented itself regionally and saw its focus in the European location competition , which municipalities , regions and companies are exposed to. Application-oriented research should be in the foreground in all regional economic issues. Haller was BAW director from 1977 to 1986, then became a councilor and returned in 1999 as director.
In April 2010 it became known that the institute is in financial difficulties. The solvency could only by a bridging loan is in the amount of 250,000 euros maintained, which had led to some argument in the Red-Green coalition government; Heiner Heseler ( SPD ) - State Councilor at the Senator for Economics and Ports - had been criticized by the Greens .
"It was right, and that saved us time."
“The BAW is a private institute that has often failed with its reports on major projects such as the 'Space Park'. Now it receives another guarantee, although there is no sustainable concept. "
All 14 permanent employees and both managing directors received precautionary dismissals as of December 31, 2010. Four employees have the right to return to the Bremen public service.
The institute was dissolved on September 29, 2010. Ongoing research projects are being continued by the University of Bremen and the newly established Bremen branch of the Hamburg World Economic Institute (HWWI).
