The WFB Bremen Economic Development is a company of the state of Bremen (92.27%), the city of Bremen (6.95%) and the city of Bremerhaven (0.78%). First, Bremer Investitions-Gesellschaft mbH (BIG) was founded to make Bremen attractive to investors and, in this context, to offer support for companies looking for locations, commercial space , office and commercial real estate. Starting in 2000, she developed a concept for the large residential complexes in Bremen threatened by foreclosure with a total of around 1500 residential units. On June 1, 2009, the Bremen Economic Development Corporation became the successor to BIG, with HVG Hanseatische Veranstaltungs-GmbH , Bremen Marketing GmbH and MGH Messe- und Expositiongesellschaft Hansa GmbH being brought together under one roof. WFB also took over all of the shares in Bremer Aufbau-Bank, which has been offering loans since 2001.

According to its own statements, the WFB owns shares in the following companies: Bremer Aufbau-Bank GmbH (100%), Glocke Veranstaltungs-GmbH (100%), which is responsible for the concert hall Die Glocke , Bremer Weser-Stadion GmbH (50%), Musikfest Bremen GmbH (40%) and EVG elko Event and Building Service GmbH (20%). In 2017, the shareholder aims to restructure WFB. The innovation department is to be separated and relocated to the Senator for Economics and the trade fair business is to be merged with the wholesale market.
