The BBÖ 1280 were electric locomotives of the Austrian Federal Railways BBÖ.

Due to the advancing electrification from Innsbruck to Salzburg to the east and the increasing freight traffic also on the Brenner Railway , there was a renewed demand for freight train locomotives. Since, on the one hand, the potential of electrical traction had been recognized and, on the other hand, the superstructure had been reinforced, stronger and somewhat heavier locomotives than the 1080 / 1080.1 series could be procured in 1926 .

The electrical part of the total of 22 locomotives was supplied by AEG . The mechanical part of the first 15 from the StEG Lokomotivfabrik , the last seven from the Floridsdorf Lokomotivfabrik , as the StEG factory has been closed in the meantime. The appearance of the vehicles was even more boxy than that of the 1080.1 series.

The Kandó articulated frame drive ("Kandó triangle"), which had proven itself in Hungary , was chosen as the drive . In contrast to the 1080 / 1080.1 series, only two double motors were used, which were also used in the 1070 series . However, the drive did not prove itself. It could not be improved even by various modifications, so that the locomotives often made real leaps and bounds.

With the delivery of the 1170.2 series in the mid-1930s, the machines lost their importance in freight transport. They were only used in shunting and for shunting goods trains.

The Deutsche Reichsbahn designated the vehicles with E 88.2. Two locomotives were lost during the Second World War . From 1953 the ÖBB returned to the designation of origin. The machines were taken out of service by 1976. A few locomotives were still used as preheating systems , but have since been scrapped. 1280.14 was intended for the Austrian Railway Museum, but could be bought by the ÖGEG . Today it is in a bad but complete condition in the Ampflwang Railway Museum.
