history

A village mosque was built in the 1950s, the village elementary school and teacher's apartment in 1962. Until 1985, Başbağlar was not connected to the road network. In 1987 the village received a sewer system. In 1990 544 people lived in Başbağlar.

massacre

On July 5, 1993, Başbağlar was the scene of a serious crime. An armed group of around 100 attacked the village. A total of 33 villagers were shot or died in the flames. Numerous houses were burned. The massacre is widely blamed on the Kurdistan Workers' Party and viewed as revenge for the arson attack on Sivas , which had occurred three days earlier and which also claimed numerous victims. The massacre was never fully investigated. A long court case against 18 people ended in 1998, despite years of pre-trial detention, with acquittals in terms of involvement in the attack. The massacre aroused anti-Jewish and anti-Serb resentment in certain circles.
