Babu Ram Ishara (born September 7, 1934 in Una , Himachal Pradesh , † July 25, 2012 in Mumbai , Maharashtra ) was an Indian film director and screenwriter .

Life

Babu Ram Ishara was born as Roshanlal Sharma in the Una district in what is now the state of Himachal Pradesh . At the age of 16, he went to Bombay to make a living in the film business. In the late 1960s he worked as a screenwriter for films by Dulal Guha , BK Adarsh and others under the pseudonym Babu Ram Ishara . As a film director, Ishara explored the limits of what could be publicly shown in the course of the New Indian Cinema in the early 1970s. In particular his films Chetna (1970) and Charitra(1973) sparked discussions at the Indian censorship authority about the limits of nudity and artistic freedom, which finally led in 1979 to the addition of a passage to the censorship guidelines to delete scenes that glorify or justify drinking, vulgarity, obscenity and viciousness. Her main role in Charitra was the film debut of Parveen Babi , who starred in the film alongside the cricketer Salim Durani .

From 1984 until his death, Ishara was married to the actress Rehana Sultan , who played the lead role of the prostitute in Chetna . He died of tuberculosis in Juhu Criticare Hospital .
