occupation

Bad Boy Bubby is a film by the Dutch - Australian director Rolf de Heer that is influenced by elements of both tragic comedy and drama . By letting the infantile Bubby see and experience our unknown world, he holds up a relentless mirror to parents, society and religion from the point of view of someone new for the first time.

action

The 35-year-old Bubby is kept in a windowless 2-room apartment by his mother without ever having seen the outside world. The mother tells him that there is poison gas in the air, so he has to stay inside. On the other hand, she herself leaves the apartment with a gas mask during the day . When she is at home, she treats Bubby like a naughty little boy, tortures and abuses him, and has sex with him too .

Bubby, who is on the intellectual level of a toddler and doesn't know any other life, apparently feels all of this as normal. When one day Bubby's father, whom he has never seen before, returns, his world turns upside down. Bubby's father - a priest - also treats him very badly and also takes his mother away from him. One evening, Bubby wrapped cling film around the faces of his sleeping parents so that they suffocate .

The biggest step of his life is now ahead of him: the step outside. Bubby knows nothing of the outside world, can barely speak and continues to assume that poison gas will kill him as soon as he leaves the apartment. After staying with his dead parents for a while, he still dares. In the course of the film you can see Bubby trying to get along with the outside world. Due to his background, he is of course completely unadjusted and overwhelmed, which makes him stumble from one problem to the next. He is often badly insulted, has to go to prison or endure violence. But also positive experiences result from his childlike naive nature.

After all sorts of capers, Bubby finally finds a friend in the handicapped worker Angel, with whom he later even has children. He also performs with a band, where as a “ front man ” he only yells into the microphone that he has heard from other people.
