The Baden-Württemberg is a frigate of the German Navy and type ship of the Baden-Württemberg class , also known as the F125 class. The warship named after the federal state of Baden-Württemberg is the first unit of this name in a German navy, although there have already been ships with the name of parts of the current state (see SMS Baden and SMS Württemberg ) .

history

Frigate Baden-Württemberg in the Blohm + Voss shipyard in Hamburg (2014)

The Baden-Württemberg was laid on November 2, 2011 in cooperation between the Bremen Lürssen shipyard and ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems in the Hamburg shipyard Blohm + Voss . The ceremonial christening took place in the presence of the Prime Minister of Baden-Württemberg, Winfried Kretschmann, by his wife, Gerlinde Kretschmann, on December 12, 2013. The launch was carried out on March 31, 2014 in silence, as there were some delays during construction, which postponed the schedule by a year.

At the beginning of October 2014, the first crew for a class F125 frigate was set up in Wilhelmshaven . Its commander, frigate captain Markus Venker, will accompany the testing and introduction of the Baden-Württemberg as a military skipper . On April 1, 2015, frigate captain Björn Baggesen was given command of the BRAVO crew . On April 7, 2016, the frigate was first put into service as part of a shipyard test drive. On July 18, 2016, the so-called "small flag change" was carried out. The civil shipyard captain passed responsibility to the military skipper. On the same day, the Baden-Württemberg entered its home port of Wilhelmshaven for the first time .

The commissioning and handover to the 4th frigate squadron was planned for 2017; In December 2017, however, it became known that the ship would be returned to the manufacturer from January 19, 2018 in order to remedy defects with a longer lay-in period.

On April 30, 2019, the ship was handed over to the Navy. The commissioning followed on June 17, 2019 in Wilhelmshaven.

From February 2020 to April 2020, the frigate carried out the warm water tests of its technical systems under extreme climatic conditions and in realistic combat situations in sea areas off the Brazilian coast . This has confirmed that the systems of Baden-Württemberg are resilient even under extreme conditions. Class 125 frigates are generally designed for outside air temperatures between minus 15 to plus 45 degrees Celsius and for water temperatures from just below zero to over 30 degrees. The counterpart to the hot water test is the cold water test that the frigate had previously completed.
