As Badisch Siberia is colloquially a tract of land in southwestern Germany denotes predominantly in the northeast of Baden-Württemberg and to a small extent in Unterfranken located. Surname

One reason for the allusion to Siberia is the climate, which was characterized by harsh and snowy winters in colder times compared to the Upper Rhine Plain . Added to this is the earlier, historically and geographically determined economic backwardness and the formerly low settlement density and inadequate transport connections. Last but not least, Baden officials felt that a transfer to this northeastern region was a "banishment".

The term was originally a derogatory external name, but has now lost its meaning. It is therefore only used in a humorous sense, sometimes even by residents of the area in the sense of a regional identity (see also Geusenwort ). In the second half of the 20th century a real change of circumstances took place through which the former backwardness dissolved. In addition, global warming is also noticeable here with a more moderate climate. Even in the Middle Ages, the climate was probably not particularly cold. The area known as "Badisch Siberia" is located in the area of the former Gaus Wingarteiba , the name of which is evidence of viticulture .

Large parts of the area were ruled by the Prince Diocese of Würzburg and the Archdiocese of Mainz for centuries. It was not until 1806 that the area fell to the Grand Duchy of Baden . For this reason, the Catholic Badisch Siberia has a special position in denominational terms in the otherwise predominantly Protestant north of Baden-Württemberg and also includes the so-called Madonnenländchen .

Region around Meßkirch

Sometimes the region around Meßkirch in southern Baden is also referred to as Badisch Siberia , for example the Büchner Prize winner Arnold Stadler likes to refer to his home region as such.
