Bagaroua (also: Bagaraoua ) is a rural community and the capital of the Bagaroua department of the same name in Niger .

geography

Bagaroua is located in the southern Sahel region . The neighboring municipalities are Tébaram in the north, Bambeye in the northeast, Illéla in the east, Alléla in the south, Dogonkiria in the west and Kourfeye Center in the northwest. The municipality is divided into 37 administrative villages, two traditional villages, 75 hamlets, a camp and a water point. The main town of the rural community is the village of Bagaroua.

In the municipality of Bagaroua is the Mare de Dan Doutchi lake , whose 38,250 hectare wetland has been under protection under the Ramsar Convention since 2005 .

history

Bagaroua is a Hausa word and means " acacia ". An administrative post ( poste administratif ) was set up in the village in 1970 , a lower administrative unit headed by a chef de poste administratif . The rural community of Bagaroua was separated from the canton of Illéla / Tajaé in 2002 as part of a nationwide administrative reform. In the flood disaster in West and Central Africa in 2010 , 8,596 residents of Bagaroua were classified as disaster victims, more than any other municipality in the Tahoua region. The administrative post of Bagaroua was removed from the Illéla department in 2011 and elevated to the Bagaroua department.

population

At the 2001 census, Bagaroua had 45,112 inhabitants. At the 2012 census, the population was 72,293.

politics

In the local elections in July 2004, Maman Chékaraou ( PNDS-Tarayya ) was elected mayor. On April 15, 2010, the Council of Ministers appointed Garba Fodi as Administrator ( Administrateur Délégué ) of the municipality and Boubacar Mahamadou Maïga as Head of the Administrative Post ( Chef de poste administratif ) of Bagaroua.

Economy and Infrastructure

The municipality is mainly located in an area in which rain-fed agriculture is predominant. In the northwest the zone of agropastoralism begins , in the southeast the zone of irrigation farming . Bagaroua is an important market for trading cowpeas and grain. The municipality is connected to the departmental capital Illéla by the national road 15 .
