Bambeye (also: Bambaye , Bambèye ) is a rural community in the Tahoua department in Niger .

geography

Granary in the village of Jaja in Bambeye parish

Bambeye is located in the Ader landscape in the Sahel . The neighboring communities are Tahoua and Takanamat in the north, Kalfou in the east, Badaguichiri , Bagaroua and Illéla in the south and Tébaram in the west. There are 54 villages and 80 hamlets in the municipality. The main town of the rural community is the village of Bambeye. The largest village by population is Mouléla .

The east of the municipality is characterized by plateaus, the west by dunes. Both are cut through by valleys and lowlands. The Forêt classée de Danfan with 540 hectares and the Forêt classée de Tapkin Zaki with 1070 hectares are two protected forest areas in the municipal area of Bambeye. It was placed under protection in 1955.

history

The first settlers in Bambeye were Tuareg , to whom many place names in the municipality go back. The rural community Bambeye emerged in 2002 from the canton of the same name founded by the French administration in 1947 . One reason for the creation of the canton was that its population followed the religious beliefs of the Azna relatively uniformly . When the hunger crisis in Niger in 2005, Bambeye was one of the hardest hit places. Here the population had less than one meal a day available. In July 2008 floods, 336 residents of Bambeye were classified as harmed.

population

At the 2012 census, Bambeye had 112,962 inhabitants. At the 2001 census, the population was 78,348. The majority of the population are Hausa . There are also Tuareg and Fulbe who live in camps around the larger villages.

politics

In the local elections in July 2004 Ibro Dan Kassou ( PNDS-Tarayya ) was elected mayor. On April 15, 2010, the Council of Ministers appointed Dan Fane Weslamane as Administrator ( Administrateur Délégué ) of the municipalities of Bambeye, Tébaram and Takanamat.

The traditional political and social structures still exist in the villages of Bambeye. In addition to the traditional local chiefs , various officials preside over certain population groups: the sarkin makéra the blacksmiths, the sarkin makidi the griots and the sarkin wanzamaye the hairdressers. The head of a traditional women's organization bears the title Koungiya . The imam of a village is called a sarkin mallamaye .

Economy and Infrastructure

The most important branch of the economy is agriculture, followed by livestock. The cultivation of millet, sorghum and cowpeas , which is mainly still carried out with traditional equipment and methods, primarily serves the self-sufficiency of the population. The breeding of cattle, sheep, goats, horses, donkeys and camels is an important source of income. There are conflicts between sedentary and nomadic ranchers over the use of the limited available pasture land. During the dry seasons, more than 80 percent of the population aged 16 to 45 years migrate abroad. The main destination countries are Libya , Algeria , Nigeria , Ivory Coast , Cameroon and Gabon . Forestry is of growing importance. The eucalyptus and neem trees that grow in the valleys and lowlands are cut down and sold as timber in the regional capital Tahoua.

A 15 kilometer long road connects the main town Bambeye with the city of Tahoua. In addition, a section of National Road 25 , which connects Tahoua with Abala , runs through the municipality. Both roads are in very poor condition. There are 54 elementary schools and one middle school in Bambeye. The health facilities are limited to five health centers ( Centers de santé intégre ), eight health houses ( Cases de santé ) and two mobile facilities ( Centers forains ).
