Kalfou (also: Kalfu ) is a rural community in the Tahoua department in Niger .

geography

Kalfou is located in the Sahel zone and is an eastern suburb of the regional capital Tahoua . The other neighboring communities of Kalfous are Barmou in the northwest, Kao in the north, Tabalak in the northeast, Keita in the east, Tamaské in the southeast, Badaguichiri in the south and Bambeye in the southwest. There are 59 villages and 54 hamlets in the municipality. The main town of the rural community is Kalfou, consisting of the villages of Kalfou Dabagui and Kalfou Rafi. Other larger villages in the municipality are Bagueye and Toudouni .

Large parts of the municipality, including the main town, are located in the Ader Doutchi mountainous landscape . The northeast of the municipality lies in the catchment area of ​​the Mare de Tabalak lake . The Forêt classée de Minao is a 60 hectare protected forest in the municipality of Kalfou. It was placed under protection in 1955.

history

Kalfou was founded in the 17th century. The local market was one of the small markets in the region that was approved by the French administration at the beginning of the 20th century . The rural community of Kalfou emerged in 2002 as part of a nationwide administrative reform from the canton of Kalfou, from which Barmou was separated as an independent rural community.

population

At the 2012 census, Kalfou had 111,274 inhabitants. At the 2001 census, the population was 75,446.

politics

In the local elections in July 2004, Aboubacar Alkou Ibrah ( PNDS-Tarayya ) was elected mayor.

Economy and Infrastructure

In the south of the community rain-fed agriculture is practiced, in the north agropastoralism predominates. Labor migration abroad is also of economic importance . Kalfou is on National Road 16 , which connects the town with the neighboring cities of Keita and Tahoua.
