Kao (also: Kaou ) is a rural community in the Tchintabaraden department in Niger .

geography

Kao is in the Sahel region . The neighboring communities are Tchintabaraden in the north, Abalak in the northeast, Akoubounou in the east, Tabalak in the southeast, Kalfou in the south, Barmou in the southwest, Affala in the west and Tillia in the northwest. The municipality is divided into 37 administrative villages, 23 traditional villages, 28 hamlets, seven camps and eight water points. The main town of the rural community is the administrative village of Kao (also: Kaou).

The climate in Kao is hot and dry. The average annual rainfall is between 250 and 300 mm. Around two thirds of the municipal area overgrown by the grass species Cenchrus biflorus is used as pastureland.

history

The place Kao was founded in 1939. The name Kao or Kaou is a short form of the name of its founder. In 1946, the French administration at the time set up a school in Kao especially for the nomadic population. The school was the second of its kind in Niger after the one in Azarori founded in 1944 . A gendarme and a civilian were killed in an attack by the Aïr and Azawad Liberation Front on Kao in 1992.

The rural community Kao was established as an administrative unit in 2002 as part of a nationwide administrative reform in a previously community-free area. During the hunger crisis in Niger in 2005, Kao was one of the hardest hit places. Here the population had less than one meal a day available. The population suffers from chronic food shortages.

population

At the 2001 census, Kao had 32,083 residents. For 2010, 43,228 inhabitants were calculated. Hausa , Tuareg and Fulbe live in the rural community .

politics

In the local elections in July 2004 Amadou Atchi ( PNDS-Tarayya ) was elected mayor.

Economy and Infrastructure

Kao is located on the national road 22 , which connects the place with the neighboring town of Tchintabaraden. The weekly market in the main town of Kao was founded in 1962. The market day is Wednesday. The handicrafts such as wicker and leather goods, which are mainly made by women, are difficult to market due to the remoteness of the rural community. The inadequate pasture areas lead to social conflicts between arable farmers and ranchers.
