Barmou is a rural municipality in the department of Tahoua in Niger .
geography
Barmou is in the north of the Ader landscape in the Sahel . The neighboring communities are Kao in the north, Kalfou in the east, Tahoua in the south and Affala in the west. There are 28 villages, 23 hamlets and three camps in the municipality. The main town of the rural community is the village of Barmou. Another large village is Toro .
history
The rural community of Barmou was separated from the north-western part of the canton of Kalfou as an independent administrative unit in 2002 as part of a state-wide administrative reform.
population
At the 2012 census, Barmou had 43,856 inhabitants. The population at the 2001 census was 34,987.
politics
In the local elections in July 2004, Abdoulkarim Hamidou ( PNDS-Tarayya ) was elected mayor.
Economy and Infrastructure
The community is located in a zone where agropastoralism is practiced. The weekly market in Barmou benefits from its location between the residential areas of the sedentary and nomadic population. It is the largest cattle market in the country, even before the one in Zinder . The Wodaabe nomads use the Barmou market to supply household goods, fabrics, food and spices.
