Keita (also: Keïta ) is a municipality and the capital of the Keita department in Niger .

geography

Keita belongs to the Sahel zone and is located in the Ader Doutchi mountainous landscape east of the regional capital Tahoua . The four main valleys in the municipality, which continue into the neighboring municipalities, are the Keita Valley, Loudou Valley, Seyté Valley and Tamaské Valley. The north of the municipality lies in the catchment area of the Mare de Tabalak lake . The neighboring communities of Keitas are Tabalak in the north, Ibohamane in the east, Garhanga in the south and Kalfou and Tamaské in the west.

The municipality is divided into 14 districts and a rural area with 50 villages and 14 hamlets. The districts are called Hôpital, Idé Waran (I), Idé Waran (II), Idé Waran Zango, Inwala, Keïta, Pépinière, Quartier Administratif, Rougga, Tanfa, Toudou, Toudou Idé Waran, Toudou Inwala and Toudoun Maï Guichiri.

history

The French colonial administration made the Tuareg-ruled town the seat of a canton of the same name in 1904 , from which the Hausa- dominated Garhanga and Tamaské cantons were separated in 1913. In 1917, insurgent Tuaregs operating from Italian- occupied Libya attacked Keita. The canton chief Afadandan Ichawa was killed and Keita looted. The attack led to a successful counter-offensive by the French.

In the late 1940s and early 1950s, Keita developed from a village to a small town as the population grew. In 1964, in independent Niger, Keita became the capital of a sub-prefecture , later the department of Keita, and asserted itself against the neighboring town of Tamaské, which was of great regional importance as a market town. The municipality of Keita was expanded in 2002 to include parts of the dissolved Canton of Keita.

population

At the 1977 census, Keita had 3,572 inhabitants, at the 1988 census 6,644 inhabitants and at the 2001 census 8,306 inhabitants. At the 2012 census, after the municipal area expanded, the population was 67,304. In addition to the Tuareg, Hausa and Fulbe also live in the city.

Economy and Infrastructure

The city lies at the transition from the agropastoral zone in the north to the rain-fed zone in the south. National Road 16 runs through Keita and connects the town with the cities of Bouza , Madaoua and Tahoua . Keita is the seat of a Tribunal d'Instance, one of the 30 civil courts nationwide , which are below the ten civil courts of the first instance (Tribunal de Grande Instance). There is a local radio communautaire in the city . The Keita Dam was put into operation in 1955. 46% of the population have no access to drinking water. One of the greatest infrastructural problems in the city is the inadequate medical care. The health infrastructure consists of a district hospital , two Health Centers of the Center de Santé Intégré (CSI) type, seven simple Case de Santé (SC) type health centers and a pharmacy. There are two secondary schools in the municipality: a Collège d'Enseignement Général (CEG) in the city center and a Complexe d'Enseignement Secondaire (CES) in the village of Insafari.

Twin town

A town partnership has existed with Pesaro in Italy since 1987.
