Madaoua is a municipality and the capital of the Madaoua department of the same name in Niger .

geography

The agricultural city is located in the fertile plain of the Tarka valley in the Sahel zone . Madaoua consists of eleven city districts and a rural municipality with 73 villages, 80 hamlets and two camps. The neighborhoods are Agadestaoua, Alkalaoua, Dar Es Salam, Djamoul, Kara Kara, Madaoua, Malamaoua, Mariétou, Sabon Gari, Tsakaoua and Tsakaoua Gabass. The largest rural villages include Aouloumatt , Gandassamou , Nakoni and Tounfafi . The neighboring communities of Madaouas are Bouza and Karofane in the north, Ourno in the east, Bangui in the south, Sabon-Guida in the south-west, Galma Koudawatché in the west and Azarori in the north-west.

history

The market in the Madaoua village of Tounfafi was one of the small markets in the region that was approved by the French administration at the beginning of the 20th century . Madaoua was elevated to the district capital in the French military territory of Niger in 1909. The cities of Maradi and Tibiri , among others, were part of this large district, the capital of which had previously been Tahoua . Later the place lost this supra-regional importance again. Only the Madaoua market developed into an important transshipment point for peanuts in the 1960s , which was Niger's most important export at the time.

In 1988 Madaoua received the status of an independent municipality together with nine other Nigerien towns. By then there had been twelve parishes nationwide. In July 2008, the floods destroyed 24 houses in the city and over 200 people were considered damaged. In 2009 around 4,000 residents suffered material damage from flooding. The flood disaster in West and Central Africa in 2010 was relatively mild for Madaoua: 558 residents of the village of Kaba II were classified as victims of the disaster.

population

At the 1977 census, Madaoua had 14,988 inhabitants, at the 1988 census 11,649 inhabitants and at the 2001 census 22,175 inhabitants. At the 2012 census, after enlarging the municipal area, the population was 127,254.

politics

In the local elections in July 2004, Abdoulaye Altiné ( PNDS-Tarayya ) was elected mayor. On April 15, 2010 the Council of Ministers appointed Gazibo Sadou administrator ( Administrateur Délégué ) of the municipality.

Culture and sights

One of the city's attractions is the palace of the traditional ruler of Madaoua. The city is an important center for the Nigerian martial arts lutte traditionnelle .

Economy and Infrastructure

Madaoua is located in the narrow zone along the border with Nigeria , which stretches from Tounouga in the west to Malawa in the east and is used in irrigation farming for cash crops . In addition to onions, millet, sorghum , black peas , peanuts, carrots, cabbage, green lettuce, melons, sweet potatoes and cassava are grown. Agriculture and livestock are the most important branches of the population.

The trade is carried out by regular companies as well as informally , especially with neighboring Nigeria. In 2010 an onion trading center was opened in Madaoua. Other such institutions are located in the municipalities of Tamaské and Tsernaoua . Onion cultivation plays an important role in the agriculture of the Tahoua region .

Madaoua is on National Road 1 , which is part of the Dakar-N'Djamena Highway , and on National Road 16 , which connects the city with the regional capital Tahoua. In the education sector, there are 42 primary schools and six secondary schools available (as of February 2007). The gross enrollment rate in 2007 was around 62%. Madaoua is the seat of a Tribunal d'Instance, one of the 30 civil courts nationwide , which are below the ten civil courts of the first instance (Tribunal de Grande Instance).
