Galma Koudawatché (short: Galma ) is a rural community in the Madaoua department in Niger .

geography

Galma Koudawatché is located at the transition from the Sudan to the Sahel zone . The neighboring communities are Tama in the northwest, Azarori in the northeast, Madaoua in the southeast, Sabon-Guida in the south and Doguérawa in the west. The municipality is divided into 24 villages, 22 hamlets and two camps. The main town of the rural community is the village of Galma Koudawatché (also: Galma Sédentaire). It is located in the Arewa Valley, a side valley of the Tarka Valley . Other larger villages in the municipality are Magaria Makéra Bakalé and Nassaraoua Takoulé .

history

The village of Galma Nomade is an old rulership of the Tuareg subgroup Kel Gress, which goes back to the Kel-Gress leader Wanna Goda, who ruled from 1692 to 1732. Starting in 1579, the Kel Gress had moved from their previous settlement area in the Aïr high mountains, stage by stage, southwards. Today's main town Galma Koudawatché (Galma Sédentaire) was founded around 1800. Koudawatché was the name of a village chief known for his courage and strength. The village of Galma Koudawatché is subordinate to the Kel-Gress leader of Galma Nomade, but is mostly inhabited by Hausa .

As a result of the famine in the Sahel region in the 1970s and 1980s , which was accompanied by massive cattle deaths, agriculture gained in importance over cattle breeding. Galma Koudawatché was hit by a devastating flood in 1994, which left several people dead and destroyed fertile arable land. As a result, some residents emigrated to Nigeria and the neighboring community of Sabon-Guida.

The rural community of Galma Koudawatché emerged from part of the canton of Madaoua in 2002 as part of a nationwide administrative reform.

population

At the 2001 census, Galma Koudawatché had 33,965 inhabitants. At the 2012 census, the population was 57,255.
