Tamaske is a rural municipality in the department of Keita in Niger .

geography

Tamaské is located in the Sahel zone . The neighboring communities are Kalfou in the northwest, Keita in the northeast, Garhanga in the southeast and Badaguichiri in the south. There are 44 villages and 30 hamlets in the Tamaské municipality. The main town of the rural community is the village of Tamaské. Another large village in the municipality is Sakolé .

Large parts of the municipality, including the main town, are located in the Ader Doutchi mountainous landscape . The main valleys in Tamaské are the Tamaské Valley, in which the municipality's capital is located, as well as the Keita Valley, the Laba Valley and the Doudoubey Valley, all of which continue in the neighboring municipalities to the east.

history

When the first French military expedition arrived in 1900, Tamaské was already a large Hausa settlement. France established a military post in the village in 1901. The Tamaské market was one of the most important in the region, authorized by the French administration at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1913, Tamaské was separated from the Keita canton as a separate canton .

Tamaské received the status of a community ( French : commune ) in 1988 together with nine other Nigerien towns . Previously there were twelve parishes nationwide. The territory of the rural municipality of Tamaské corresponds to the canton of Tamaské, which was dissolved in 2002 as part of a state-wide administrative reform.

At the 2001 census, Tamaské had 67,486 inhabitants. At the 2012 census, the population was 111,358.

Culture and sights

In 1979, a major was in Tamaske mosque in the Iraqi style built. The building was financed by Hausa dealers from Tamaské who had emigrated to Nigeria.

Economy and Infrastructure

Tamaské is on National Road 16 . The municipality is home to one of three tanneries in the Tahoua region . The other two are in the regional capital Tahoua and in the village of Magaria Makéra Bakalé, which is part of the rural municipality of Galma Koudawatché . There is a cattle market in the main town. The market day is Sunday. An onion trading center was opened in Tamaské in 2010, after the country's first such facility was established in 2007 in Tsernaoua . The Tahoua region is known for growing onions.

There are secondary schools each with a Collège d'Enseignement Général (CEG) in the villages of Sakolé and Tamaské. The health infrastructure in the municipality consists of a Center de Santé Intégré (CSI) health center and 14 simple Case de Santé (SC) health centers . The only hospital and pharmacy in the department are in the capital, Keita.
