The neighboring communities in Niger are Doguérawa in the west, Galma Koudawatché in the northwest, Madaoua in the northeast and Bangui in the east. The Tarka Valley , which is around 300 kilometers long and stretches from the Tanout department in Niger to Nigeria, runs through Sabon-Guida in a north-south direction . The municipality is divided into 37 administrative villages, 14 traditional villages, 68 hamlets and a camp. The main town of the rural community is Sabon-Guida, consisting of the administrative villages Sabon Guida I, Sabon Guida II and Sabon Guida III.

history

The cultivation of onions began in Sabon-Guida in the 1950s, spreading from here over large parts of the Tahoua region and playing an important role in the economy and in the cultural self-image of the region. The well-known onion variety Violet de Galmi , which is named after the village of Galmi in the neighboring municipality of Doguérawa, from where it came into supraregional trade, has its origins in Sabon-Guida.

The rural community Sabon-Guida emerged as an administrative unit in 2002 during a nationwide administrative reform from part of the canton of Madaoua.

population

At the 2001 census, Sabon-Guida had 62,024 inhabitants. At the 2012 census, the population was 103,232. Around two thirds of the population are Hausa , around one third Tuareg . There is also a small minority of the Fulbe .

politics

In the local elections in July 2004, Idi Tanko ( PNDS-Tarayya ) was elected mayor.

Economy and Infrastructure

The community is located in the narrow zone along the border with Nigeria, which extends from Tounouga in the west to Malawa in the east and is used in irrigation farming for cash crops . In addition to agriculture, livestock is the most important branch of the population. There is informal trade with neighboring Nigeria . Gypsum and lime are mined at several deposits. The health centers in Sabon-Guida do not cover the entire community area, which is why some of the population has to switch to the district hospital in Madaoua. There are 42 primary schools and one secondary school in the main town.
