Location of Galmi in Niger

Galmi is a village in the Doguérawa rural community in Niger .

The village, run by a traditional chief ( chef traditionnel ), is located around seven kilometers east of Doguérawa, the capital of the rural community of the same name, which belongs to the Malbaza department in the Tahoua region. The larger villages in the wider area of Galmi include Magaria Makéra Bakalé, around 13 kilometers northeast, and Kawara, around 17 kilometers to the north . National Road 1 , the country's most important trunk road, runs through Galmi .

At the 2012 census, Galmi had 13,888 inhabitants who lived in 2,493 households. At the 2001 census, the population was 11,331 in 1,910 households, and at the 1988 census, the population was 8,241 in 1,257 households.

The village is the namesake of the onion - cultivars Blanc de Galmi ("White from Galmi") and Violet de Galmi ("Violet from Galmi"), which, along with the Blanc de Soumarana ("White from Soumarana "), are among the most famous varieties from Niger counts. The cross-border trade in onions plays a major role in Galmi's economic life.

The Christian mission organization Serving In Mission (SIM) negotiated from the mid-1930s with the French colonial administration at the time to build a hospital. Her Galmi Hospital , a spacious facility on the outskirts, was finally founded in 1950. The hospital was expanded again and again in the decades that followed. The SIM mission program was less successful. In 2014, a state health center was opened in Galmi with a Center de Santé Intégré (CSI). In 2016, it was responsible for the health care of over 54,000 people in 28 villages and hamlets and was used for almost 13,000 medical consultations annually. In 2012, 183 cases of cholera were treated here, with six patients dying of the disease.

Galmi is the birthplace of the film director Sani Magori , who made an award-winning documentary about onion cultivation in his home village.
