Bagna Łatana ( German  Lattanabruch ) is a drained swamp area in southern East Prussia , now in the southern center of the Polish Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship .

description

The break is located about 20 kilometers southeast of the district town of Szczytno (Ortelsburg) and ten kilometers southeast of the city of Wielbark (Willenberg) within the Gmina Wielbark area and directly on the former state border between Prussia and Poland , which is now the border between the voivodeships Warmia-Masuria and Mazovia is formed.

The decision to drain and settle the Lattanabrbruch was made in 1767 and set in motion the first major melioration project in Masuria . First, measurements of the wetland were started, which, however, was difficult to pass due to the numerous trees and dense branches. So the measurements were moved to the winter of 1768. They were completed the following year.

Then the measures to drain the more than 380 Hufen area began. The drainage ditches ran to the Omulef ( Polish Omulew ) and the Waldpusch River ( Wałpusza ). It took seven locks to regulate the water level. The total costs of these measures amounted to a little more than 7,626 thalers. They should - as it was planned - amortize by 1810/11.

The follow-up work dragged on until 1794. Then finally the settlement of new places in Lattanabruch could begin.

Six villages emerged:

German name Changed name from
1938 to 1945
Polish name
Borken (near Willenberg) Bark heather Borki Wielbarskie
(Large) Lattana Großheidenau Łatana Wielka
Röblau Lejkowo
Schrötersau Zapadki
Wagenfeld Olędry
(Old) Werder Ostrowy

The farmhouses were placed as close as possible to the arable land in order to facilitate cultivation. This, however, gave rise to settlements that did not correspond to the otherwise usual settlement character . The villages were connected by embankments, while the meadow and forest area were cut through by numerous ditches. Incidentally, the newly founded villages received a 15-year tax exemption.

Today heathland, lakes and swampy valleys with small streams and canals characterize the Bagna-Łatana image. The area is a little known and visited part of Masuria.
