Bagni di Lusnizza ( German : Lußnitz , Friulan : Lugizze , Slovenian : Lužnice ) is a village in the municipality of Malborghetto-Valbruna in the Italian Canal Valley . About two kilometers east of the village is the small town of Santa Caterina (St. Kathrein).

Bagni di Lusnizza (Lussnitz)

Bagni di Lusnizza (Lußnitz) was known for its sulfur springs as early as the 14th century. The place was first mentioned in documents in 1353. The name is probably derived from the Slovenian Lusnica (swamp area) or Luzice (lye or sulfur water). The place is called Lugizze in Friulian.

The place in the Channel Valley with around 200 inhabitants belongs to the municipality of Malborgeth.

Santa Caterina (St. Kathrein)

Church of Santa Caterina

In the north stands the Schinouz (2201 m) and the Kuk (1591 m), which are separated from the Weißenbachgraben, which flows into the Fella here . This is where Santa Caterina ( St. Kathrein , Friulian : Sante Catarine ; Slov .: Šenkatríja ) is located, probably the oldest town in the Canal Valley. As can be seen from Bamberg documents ( Archdiocese of Bamberg ), the place was founded by settlers from Franconia in the 11th century. The old church in St. Kathrein is surrounded by five farmsteads. Only one resident emigrated from this place in the 1940s. To this day, residents speak the Carinthian dialect.

Churches

The church of Bagni di Lusnizza, which is dedicated to St. Gotthard, was donated by the Bishop Count von Hohenlohe (1244–1352). The church in the town of Santa Caterina was built in 1150 in honor of St. Kathrein.

economy

As early as 1353 there was a mention of a forge for striking and forging iron. The most efficient sawmill in the valley was built not far from this place in the interwar period. Today it stands still.

Lußnitz was once a popular place for summer vacation . Before the world wars , the place had two hotels (Thomashof and Oman) with sulfur baths and therapeutic products, which are now used as summer vacation homes for young people. Before the First World War, the sulfur springs attracted spa guests from half of Europe. The Hotel Thomashof was the most modern in the province in the 1930s and was repeatedly awarded by the Udine Chamber of Commerce .

Until recently, when the state road (Strada Statale 13) was still the main route through the Canal Valley, Bagni di Lusnizza still had several well-functioning inns and the place lived from through traffic.
