The Calw train station is a former train station in the Baden-Württemberg city of Calw . It acted as a separation station for the Nagold Valley Railway Pforzheim –Calw– Nagold - Hochdorf bei Horb and the Württemberg Black Forest Railway Stuttgart - Zuffenhausen - Weil der Stadt –Calw.

Since 1989 the trains have stopped at the stop in the newly built central bus station (ZOB) in the city of Calw.

location

The old train station outside the city center is located on the southern outskirts of Calw, less than a kilometer from the city center, on Bahnhofstrasse . The Nagold River flows in the immediate vicinity of the train station . In a north-easterly direction, the routes to Pforzheim and Weil der Stadt or Stuttgart branched out until 1989. Both routes continue northwards, initially parallel, but at different altitudes through the city, before the Black Forest Railway near Hirsau moves east from the Nagold Valley Railway. The Calw stop, which opened in 1989, is located on the Nagold Valley Railway on the eastern edge of downtown Calw.

Origin (1865–1874)

On June 20, 1872, the last and most elaborate part of the Württemberg Black Forest Railway between Weil der Stadt and Calw and with it the Calw train station was opened. The Calw – Nagold section, which today belongs to the Nagold Valley Railway, was initially also built as part of the main line coming from Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen and also opened on June 20, 1872. At the same time, the Calw depot was completed on the station premises . It had a 47 m long double-track locomotive shed with four stalls connected on both sides. There was a 16 meter turntable.

On June 1, 1874, the Brötzingen – Calw section was opened, turning the Calw station from a through station to a separation station .

Development up to the Second World War (1874–1945)

Calw train station around 1900

In the early years of the Nagold Valley Railway, long-distance trains ran between Calw and Horb - coming from Stuttgart - via the Württemberg Black Forest Railway to Singen am Hohentwiel and on to Lake Constance or Schaffhausen . However, this only lasted until 1879, when the Gäubahn went into operation, with which this connection could be shortened.

In 1892 a single-track workshop with an axle sink was built in the depot. The large engine shed was lengthened by ten meters in 1942.

After the Second World War (1945–1983)

In 1953, the Calw depot was dissolved as an independent service, but it was still used for two years for steam locomotives . In 1961 a diesel filling station was built. In 1973 the depot's buildings were demolished. The tracks of the depot, the foundations of the buildings and the remains of the turntable have been preserved to this day .

Last years of operation and job (1983–1989)

On May 29, 1983, passenger traffic between Weil der Stadt and Calw was suspended. On February 29, 1988, with the abandonment of freight traffic, the route was closed completely. As a result, the Calw station lost its function as a transfer station between Nagoldtal- and Schwarzwaldbahn and became a through station again.

In 1989, the Signalized Zugleitbetrieb (SZB) was introduced on the Nagold Valley Railway . This system is used, among other things, to set points, signals and barriers from a central point. In Calw, at the same time as the SZB went into operation, a new, central stopping point in the building of the newly created central bus station (ZOB) went into operation. With the creation of this central local transport hub, the previous train station outside the city center was given up initially for passenger and later also for freight traffic. Since then it has been called Awanst Calw Süd .

building

The relatively large and representative reception building , which is under monument protection , still bears witness to the old Calw train station, which was in operation until 1989 . Between two three-storey corner buildings with hipped roofs there is a single-storey central building, the middle section of which has a second storey with gables on the street and track side. The 66 m long building is made entirely of red sandstone. The canopy on the track side is supported by cast iron pillars.

After the business was closed, a grocery store was temporarily housed in it. Today the station building houses various shops. Although the two mechanical signal boxes, which are also under monument protection, have remained, the station is no longer of any operational importance. Only the track directly at the station building, the former house platform , is still used by the Nagoldtalbahn trains.

Platforms and tracks

At the time of passenger traffic, the Calw station had four platform tracks and another track to bypass the platforms for passing trains. Track 1 was on the house platform, tracks 2, 3 and 4 on a central platform . Track 2 and 4 were through tracks on both sides of the platform. Track 3 was a stump track that ended in the northern end of the central platform by running through the middle of the platform for a few meters, splitting it into two narrow parts. Only track 1 is still used today. All switch connections between track 1 and other tracks have been removed. However, with the exception of track 2, which was partially dismantled, all the station tracks, the two platforms and the track systems of the former depot are still there (as of 2014). Vehicles belonging to the Württembergische Schwarzwaldbahn Calw – Weil der Stadt (WSB) association are parked on track 3 and on several tracks of the depot (status 2014).
