List of train stations in Switzerland |
The station Einsiedeln is a railway terminus in schwyzerischen District Einsiedeln . It is the end point of the Wädenswil – Einsiedeln railway line and is operated by the Swiss Southeast Railway .
Location and architecture
The train station is on the edge of the village center. The station building is upside down. There is a busy intersection with a roundabout in front of the train station. Since the renovation, the station has been built more openly, the trains are easily accessible on foot from almost all directions. For a long time there have been suggestions to improve access on the one hand, and to create a car-free station square on the other. However, this failed again and again due to financial and infrastructural problems, as otherwise all of Einsiedeln's car traffic would have to be re-routed.
The station has two central platforms with four tracks for passenger traffic, plus sidings and sidings, one of which was pulled through to the building.
history
The station was opened to traffic on May 1, 1877 in the train of the opening of the Wädenswil-Einsiedeln-Bahn (WE). In 1899, through the merger of WE and the Lake Zurich Gotthard Railway Company, it became the Swiss Southeast Railway (SOB) , which still operates the station today.
In 1981 he played an important role on the occasion of the visit of Pope John Paul II , who got off his special train here and made a pilgrimage to the monastery . In order to cope with the large volume of traffic, the Neuberg service station was built between Biberbrugg and Einsiedeln , which to this day enables two trains to cross on the otherwise single-lane route.
Since the introduction of the Zurich S-Bahn in 1990, it has been the end point of the S13 from Wädenswil . Before that, the train connections were regional trains. As part of the regional train reforms in 2004, the regional trains Siebnen-Wangen - Einsiedeln, which run five times a day, were converted into the half-hourly S40 Rapperswil - Einsiedeln.

In the past, two pairs of S-Bahn trains with the nickname " Gipfeli-Express" ran to Zurich Altstetten station on weekdays with SBB wagons and an SOB Re 446 . This line was discontinued in 2014.
The station is a hub of regional postal bus -Netzes. From here, bus lines start to the surrounding area, such as to the monastery, to Trachslau - Alpthal - Brunni , Egg , Wilerzell , Gross , Euthal or Oberiberg - Unteriberg with the Weglosen and Laucheren valley stations of the Hoch-Ybrig cable car. As a result, the station serves as a railway connection for the entire central part of the canton.
