history

Füssen train station around 1890

On March 14, 1888, Prince Regent Luitpold granted the concession for the construction of the Oberdorf – Fuessen railway line . On December 1, 1888, the railway line was put into operation and with it the Füssen train station. The station was connected to downtown Füssen by a wide street. A two-story residential building for railway employees was built next to the station. The station building was built to the south of the tracks in the LAG style that was customary at the time and is similar to the station buildings in Bad Heilbrunn and Oberau . The ground floor was made of stone, the first floor was built in half-timbered construction, the compartments are filled with unplastered bricks. The attic was built with a wooden structure.

In the station building there was a waiting room for the second class and third class as well as offices. It also had an open porch. In the middle of the building ensemble there was another building in which the expedition and other offices were housed. There was also a goods hall and a two-story customs building. All buildings were built in the same style.

In 1890, a train station restoration was built at the current location at Bahnhofstrasse 10, and the post office moved into this building in 1923. At the turn of the century, numerous representative buildings were built near the train station, for example the tax office. The station building was no longer integrated into the urban character, which is why renovation was requested in 1923. The renovation did not begin until 1929 and was completed in 1930. During the renovations, the vestibule with the waiting rooms became the counter hall. The waiting rooms were moved to the house, as this house was rarely used. In addition, a new baggage hall was built, which in turn was perceived as a nuisance in the architecture of the station area.

Another renovation followed in 1976, as the roof of the station building was no longer watertight. In addition, the station building was painted yellow.

Füssen train station in 2011 (canceled in 2015)

In the course of setting up a new traffic concept for downtown Füssen, it was decided in 2006 to demolish the old station building and replace it with a new one. An antibody directed against the demolition referendum was unsuccessful. In autumn 2014, the western part of the reception building, the single-storey goods hall and the two-storey customs building, as well as the small outbuilding to the west of the building, were demolished. The eastern part with the waiting hall was still in use until spring 2015. The station building was demolished in April 2015, the modern new building was inaugurated in December 2016.

Infrastructure

At the end of the line, the station has two platform tracks on a central platform, which is barrier-free from the head end . The station has an electronic train destination display that shows the current time and train delays or cancellations. The southern track is also located on the rest of the house platform. In addition, there are two more bypass tracks, only one of which is still passable.
