The Shin-Chitose Kūkō station ( Japanese 新 千 歳 空港 駅 , Shin-Chitose-kūkō-eki ) is a train station on the Japanese island of Hokkaidō . It is located in the Ishikari sub-prefecture in the area of ​​the city of Chitose and opens up the New Chitose Airport (Shin-Chitose-kūkō) .

The airport station is an underground terminus at the end of a 2.6 km long, single-track branch of the Chitose line that runs mainly in a tunnel . It is operated by the JR Hokkaido company and branches off near Minami-Chitose Station . The double-track station is located directly below the terminal for domestic flights and has a central platform .

With the exception of a few regional trains in the early morning, express trains called Airport Liner are offered throughout the day . They run to Sapporo station every 15 minutes ; every second train continues to Teine and Otaru . Destinations in the south and east of Hokkaidō can be reached by changing trains in Minami-Chitose.

In the 2014 fiscal year, an average of 14,085 passengers per day were counted, making New Chitose Airport Station the fourth busiest station in JR Hokkaido.

history

In 1991, New Chitose Airport replaced the old Chitose Airport, which is now used as the JASDF air force base. A branch line from Minami-Chitose was created to connect the new building to the existing rail network. In October 1990, JR Hokkaido signed a cooperation agreement with the Danish State Railways (DSB), which then took on the interior design of the underground airport station. The design was so popular that the DSB then designed other stations on Hokkaidō. The Japanese government financed the construction of the airport shuttle. The station opened on July 1, 1992. Two years later, DSB and Yasui Architects and Engineering received the Brunel Award for designing the platform barriers .
