Kunitachi is a separation station on the JR East operated Chūō rapid transit line from Tokyo via Shinjuku and Hachiōji to Takao , whose tracks in this area are identical to those of the Chūō main line . Here keep Kaisoku - fast trains and Kakueki-Teisha -Nahverkehrszüge on the Chuo train line, which one during rush hour headways results of only two minutes. During the day, nine trains per hour and direction are offered. All other express and express trains pass here without stopping. The Musashino local train ( む さ し の ) runs three times a day, initially from Hachiōji via Tachikawa to Kunitachi, then reaches the Musashino line via a freight branch and runs it to Ōmiya .

There are several bus stops on the southern station forecourt, which are served by two dozen lines of the companies Keiō Dentetsu Bus , Keiō Bus Chūō , Tachikawa Bus and Kunikko . Twelve other lines from Tachikawa Bus , Kunikko and Bunbus operate from the northern forecourt.

The station stands in the central district of Itchome on a viaduct . It is oriented from east to west and has three tracks, all of which are used for passenger traffic. These are located on a central platform and on a side platform on the south side of the facility, both of which are covered. The station building is located under the viaduct and is accessible from both sides. About half a kilometer south of the train station is the Hitotsubashi University campus .

In the 2018 fiscal year, an average of 54,049 passengers used the station every day.

history

Kunitachi station on a postcard from 1926

The Chūō main line had already been opened in 1889 by the private railway company Kōbu Tetsudō , but the trains ran here without stopping for almost four decades. In 1925, Hitotsubashi University began relocating its facilities from downtown Tokyo to near the village of Yaho due to the destruction caused by the Great Kanto earthquake . In order to develop the new campus, the real estate company Kokudo had a new train station built and made it available to the Ministry of Railways . Commissioning took place on April 1, 1926. A year later, the university's move was also completed. The name Kunitachi is made up of the first Kanji characters of the surrounding train stations Kokubunji ( 国 分 寺 ) and Tachikawa ( 立 川 ). On October 15, 1928, the Ministry of Railways expanded the Chūō main line between Nakano and Kunitachi from two tracks, and on March 1, 1929, the double track extended to Tachikawa. Electrical operations began four days later. When the community of Yaho received city status in 1951, it was renamed after the train station.

Southern station building before demolition (2006)

In 1959 the Japanese State Railways built an additional station building on the north side and stopped handling goods on October 25, 1962. For experimental purposes, she installed the first automatic platform barrier in Japan on March 20, 1970 . As part of the privatization of the state railway, the station passed into the possession of the new railway company JR East on April 1, 1987 . In June 2003, the relocation of the station, which was previously at ground level, began on a viaduct. The work dragged on for more than nine years and was completed on December 16, 2012; the northern station building had to be demolished. The southern station building from 1926, however, was placed under monument protection in 1998. JR East removed the structure piece by piece in October 2006 and stored the components, with the city of Kunitachi bearing the costs. The reconstruction was delayed for several years for legal reasons. It started in September 2019 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2020. The building will then be used as a tourist information center.
