Morschheim station

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Morschheim station is a hamlet that partly belongs to the communities of Morschheim and Ilbesheim in the Kirchheimbolanden association in the Donnersbergkreis in Rhineland-Palatinate . The odd house numbers (1, 3, 5, 7) are on Morschheimer district, the even house numbers (2, 4) on Ilbesheimer.

The hamlet is named after the train station on the Donnersbergbahn .

A significant part of the buildings in the village are former operating buildings of the train station or business operations. A photovoltaic system is located between the tracks and the A 63 , which runs just a few hundred meters to the south-west .

History of the station

The eponymous station was opened in January 1874 with the first section of the Donnersbergbahn between Alzey and Kirchheimbolanden .

After the destruction of the Pfrimm Valley Viaduct in World War II , passenger traffic on the route was stopped in 1951. However, there was still freight traffic on the route until January 1, 1995 . On May 29, 1999, the line was reactivated for passenger traffic, with Morschheim station being used as a depot without stopping. This is the only possibility for train crossings on the Donnersbergbahn, which is only used very rarely.

Before the transport contract was awarded to the current operator Vlexx , the siding was used by Rhenus Veniro to park and refuel the two regional shuttles used on the route .

Originally, the station was also important for freight traffic, including a loading facility for sugar beet . A garbage sorting system operated by the operator Veolia was the last freight transport customer on the Donnersbergbahn until 1995 . The plant burned out completely in a major fire in April 2019, the damage amounted to 4 million euros, whereupon the company decided to give up the Morschheim location.
