history

Railway station in 2009

The first railway connection from Kreuz and Berlin , in the direction of Bromberg via Schneidemühl, was opened on July 27, 1851. Two years later, construction began on the railway station, which was opened in 1876 and then rebuilt several times. Further rail connections were established: in January 1871 to Flatow , in May 1879 to Posen and Neustettin and in November 1881 to Deutsch Krone . On October 1, 1907, the Royal Locomotive Workshop was opened, after 1945 the ZNTK Piła (Zakłady Naprawcze Taboru Kolejowego). In thirty years, Schneidemühl had become an important railway junction; in 1913 575,000 passengers were handled here. In the same year the Prussian state railways opened their last new line to Schneidemühl with the last section of the Sagen-Goray-Schneidemühl railway line . The Nord-Express from Paris to St. Petersburg also passed the station until 1914 .

After 1918 the station retained its importance. Schneidemühl became the seat of government of the new Prussian province Grenzmark Posen-West Prussia . Schneidemühl station became a border station for traffic to Poland and for trains of the privileged rail traffic to East Prussia via Bydgoszcz . The border station on the Polish side was the station of Kaczory ( Erpel ). The routes to Posen and Sagen-Goray ( Bzowo Goraj ), which also cross the border, were interrupted between Königsblick and Gertraudenhütte or Usch and Ujście. Both sections were reopened during the German occupation of Poland in World War II . After the war, Schneidemühl came to Poland in 1945 and has been called Piła since then .

On May 19, 1988, a military transport train accident occurred on the station premises, in which ten soldiers were killed and 28 seriously wounded. The station was electrified in the years 1989–1990. In 1993 the PKP closed the repair shop for the rolling stock (ZNTK) and on May 25, 1994 the marshalling yard .

On September 1, 2012, after a twelve-year break, rail passenger traffic between Piła and Stettin via Wałcz was resumed after the railway track had been modernized . In July 2010, the station and the locomotive shed were added to the list of monuments.

On May 16, 2014, the renovation of the station building began. During the construction work, the floors, plaster, paint, installation and roofing were renovated. The renovation also included the redesign of the ceilings. The station has been adapted to the needs of the disabled. The parking lot in front of the train station has been expanded by 70 spaces. The building was reopened on October 26, 2015.
