The railway line Česká Kamenice – Kamenický Šenov is a regional railway connection in the Czech Republic , which was originally built and operated by the kk priv. Bohemian Northern Railway (BNB) as the local railway Böhmisch Kamnitz – Steinschönau. It branches in Česká Kamenice ( Česká Kamenice ) from the railway track Děčín-Jedlová and leads in the Lusatian Mountains by Kamenický Šenov ( Steinschönau ). Today the line is maintained and operated by the owner KŽC Doprava as a museum railway.

According to a decree of the Czech government, the line has been classified as a regional railway ("regionální dráha") since December 20, 1995.

history

The first railway lines between Tetschen (today: Děčín), Bohemian Leipa and Rumburg (today: Rumburk) were built by the Bohemian Northern Railway Company BNB very early on . In 1869 the continuous line from Prague to Rumburg in the Bohemian Netherlands was completed. However, many smaller North Bohemian towns with up-and-coming industries have not yet received a rail connection.

Steinschönau, with the slowly developing glass industry , was one of these places. Demands were made to the BNB to also connect Steinschönau to the railway. A law passed in 1880 finally facilitated the construction of railways of minor importance. In 1882, the BNB presented a preliminary project, which envisaged the construction of a local railway from Böhmisch Kamnitz . The concession for the local railway from Böhmisch Kamnitz to Steinschönau was awarded to the Böhmische Nordbahn on August 4, 1884.

After six months of construction, the line was completed and on February 10, 1886, the new local line could be officially opened.

However, there was still no railway connection to the nearby district town of Bohemian Leipa. In 1892 a new law enables state guarantees to be used for the construction of private local railways. Several drafts were drawn up to cope with the topographical difficulties involved in building the route to Bohemian Leipa. The concession was only granted on March 24, 1902, and construction work could begin a little later. On August 29, 1903, the first trains ran from Böhmisch Leipa to Steinschönau.

After the nationalization of the Bohemian Northern Railway in 1908, the line belonged to the network of the kk Staatsbahnen (kkStB). After the establishment of Czechoslovakia in 1919, the Czechoslovak State Railways ČSD continued operations. In 1925, most of the private railways in Czechoslovakia were dissolved by law, and the Böhmisch Leipa-Steinschönau local railway was finally incorporated into the ČSD. From then on, the line was operated as a continuous line from Bohemian Leipa to Böhmisch Kamnitz.

During the annexation of the Sudetenland to Germany from 1938, the line was operated by the Deutsche Reichsbahn , Reichsbahndirektion Dresden. In 1945 the line came back to the ČSD.

Museum railway traffic of the club přátel lokálky (2003)

Even after the expulsion of the German population after the Second World War , the industry in Steinschönau (from 1945: Kamenický Šenov) retained its importance, so that heavy freight traffic had to continue to be managed. In contrast, the transport performance in passenger train traffic was low, so that in the 1970s it was decided to stop the traffic.

The last passenger trains ran on September 29, 1979 and the line from Česká Lípa-Střelnice to Kamenický Šenov was closed. From Česká Kamenice to Kamenický Šenov, the route continued to be operated in freight traffic. Only after the Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia in 1989 did the traffic decrease and the remaining route was closed on October 1, 1992.

In 1994 the club přátel lokálky (Club of Local Railway Friends ) was founded to set up a museum railway on the still existing track of the former northern railway line to Kamenický Šenov . On June 21, 1997 the first museum trains ran to Kamenický Šenov.

In early 2007, the route owner Správa železniční dopravní cesty (SZDC) put the route for sale. In addition to the přátel lokálky club, the železničních cestovatelů (KŽC) club also submitted an offer, which ultimately won the bid. On December 28, 2008, the route was finally bought by KŽC. The club přátel lokálky then disbanded. In 2009 and 2010, KŽC invested a total of Kč 2,414,580 in the repair of tracks and systems. A total of 2400 sleepers were replaced.

KŽC Doprava resumed museum traffic in 2011. On the weekends of the summer half-year, four pairs of trains run as “Kamenický motoráček”. From the 2016 timetable, the route will be integrated into the Ústecký kraj regional cycle as the T1 seasonal tourist route .

From September 1 to 9, 2016, after almost 40 years, local public transport trains ran again. The reason was a full closure of the road I / 13 due to construction work on the level crossing in Horní Kamenice, during which a diversion of the five intercity bus routes operating there was not possible. As a substitute, 17 pairs of passenger trains ran daily between Česka Kamenice and Kamenický Šenov, which could be used free of charge. The responsible railway company was KŽC Doprava . A class 810 railcar was used .

Vehicle use

BNB VIa

The Bohemian Northern Railway and the kkStB use the VIa series (kkStB 162) on the route.

Motorized railcars were used for the first time from the 1930s, in addition to the ČSD series M 222.0 , these were primarily the M 130.2 tower railcars . From 1949, the newly delivered class M 131.1 railcars took over passenger traffic, which were in use until operations were closed. The last passenger trains were driven in 1979 with the then new class M 152.0 railcars .
