Swell:

The Amberg – Schmidmühlen line , also known as the Vilstalbahn , was a branch line in Bavaria . It began in Amberg and led along the Vils to Schmidmühlen .

history

Although the legal basis for the local railway line , which was to connect Amberg along the Vils with Schmidmühlen, had been created as early as 1904 , there were considerable delays due to numerous disputes over detailed issues and a planned extension to Hohenburg in the Lauterach Valley. The first section to Ensdorf, which branched off from the line to Lauterhofen at Drahthammer station, could only be opened on May 1, 1910. The second part followed on December 18, 1910, so that the total route length was now 21.3 kilometers. The passenger trains already started in Amberg.

The increased use of rail buses in the 1950s and 1960s led to the cessation of passenger traffic on the rails on July 1, 1966. Freight traffic lasted much longer. The lime works in Vilshofen belonging to the Maxhütte were served. Heavy freight trains that needed three class 211 diesel locomotives drove here at times . These services ended on May 28, 1988. The section south of Vilshofen had been without traffic since May 31, 1985.

The tracks were removed in 1990 after they were bought by the district. Between 1991 and 1992 a cycle path was set up on the route . It is part of the Five Rivers Cycle Route .
