The Amberg – Schnaittenbach line , also known locally as the Hirschauer Bockl , is a branch line in Bavaria . It branches off the Nuremberg – Schwandorf railway line in Amberg and leads via Hirschau to Schnaittenbach .
history
The line was opened on October 8, 1898 by the Bavarian State Railway.
From Amberg it first follows the Vils upwards, then turns east and reaches its end point in Schnaittenbach via Hirschau . Here are three important kaolin pits that have ensured the survival of this railway. In the past decades it had at times the highest volume of goods of all Bavarian branch lines and was included in the " economically optimal network " of the German Federal Railroad . In the period after the Second World War , there were unsuccessful attempts to build the connection from Schnaittenbach to the Naab Valley near Wernberg , which would have considerably shortened the rail route to the porcelain factories in Upper Franconia, the main customers for kaolin production.
Kaolin transport has been the exclusive task of this railway since 1996.
Passenger traffic, which over the years could be handled with three to four pairs of trains a day, suffered early on from competition from rail-owned buses and private motorization. After 1960 it was restricted to a pair of trains for school traffic, on May 30, 1976 it was discontinued.
