The Brașov – Zărneşti line is a branch line in Romania . It leads in southeastern Transylvania through the Burzenland from Brașov (German: Kronstadt ) to Zărnești ( Zernen ) on the edge of the Piatra Craiului Mountains ( Königstein ).
history
At the time of its creation, the railway line was on the territory of Hungary within the Habsburg dual monarchy . The reason for the construction resulted mainly from the need to transport wood, coal, stones, agricultural products and the products of the paper mill in Zărneşti.
The project was financed by the Erlanger & Söhne banks in Frankfurt am Main and the Sulzbach brothers in Vienna . The work was carried out by the companies Leo Arnoldi and Smerker.
In February 1891 a commission determined the exact route. The route was approved as early as June 6, 1891; the train service began on June 24, 1891.
Initially, the line was operated by a private company (Brassó-Háromszéki Helyi Érdekű Vasutak, BHHÉV) before it was taken over by the Hungarian state railway MÀV on March 7, 1897 .
After the end of the First World War , Transylvania and with it the railway line came to Romania. The line became the property of the Romanian state railway company CFR .
In 2005, the traffic on the route was taken over by the private operator Regiotrans . Currently (2011) around 14 passenger trains run in both directions per day.
