The Feucht – Altdorf railway is a single-track branch line in Middle Franconia . It is the extension of the railway station wet ending Nuremberg-Feucht railway and runs from there east through the Lorenzer Reichswald to Altdorf .

history

Planning and construction

Even before it opened, the route was linked to the route from Nuremberg to Regensburg. As early as 1836 there were plans to extend the Ludwig Railway via Feucht and Altdorf and through the Lauterach , Vils and Naab valleys to Regensburg. However, the plans were not implemented because of the Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal , which was favored by King Ludwig I , as the railway line was seen as competition to the canal. It was not until the law on the construction of Vizinalbahnen of April 29, 1869 that Altdorf was connected to the main line from Nuremberg to Regensburg in Feucht. The route was finally opened on October 15, 1878 by the Bavarian State Railways .

In the course of the electrification work started in May 1950 on the main line from Nuremberg to Regensburg, the city of Altdorf requested electrification of the branch line. The efforts were successful, so that on September 2, 1952, the first electric multiple unit ran on the route.

Conversion for the S-Bahn

With the decision to build a S-Bahn network in Nuremberg , it was determined that the first construction stage should include the line from Feucht to Altdorf in addition to the routes to Lauf an der Pegnitz and Roth . Advance measures began as early as 1984, before the actual renovation work began on June 15, 1988, and was completed with the opening of the line for S-Bahn traffic on November 22, 1992. The cost of building the entire S2 was 587 million  D-Marks (300.13 million  euros ).

The construction work included the upgrading of the superstructure and the removal of numerous level crossings to increase the maximum line speed from 60 to 100 km / h as well as the renovation of the substructure. The branch line was upgraded to the main line. The platforms of the existing on-the-go stops were brought to S-Bahn standard with platforms 145 m long and 96 cm high . The Moosbach stop (formerly Hahnhof ) was relocated 600 m in the direction of Feucht and renamed Feucht-Moosbach in order to better develop the Feucht district of the same name. The Altdorf West stop was newly established to develop a residential and commercial area on the western edge of Altdorf, including two schools. The train crossing point was relocated from Winkelhaid station, whose overtaking track was expanded, to Ludersheim stop, which was upgraded to a station.

business

Push- pull trains with class 143 electric locomotives and four-part x-wagon sets are used today on the route designated as S2 . Before the S-Bahn era, electric multiple units of the 432 series and later series 141 electric locomotives operated with n-car sets. The Bombardier Talent 2 is also rarely used, with a height difference between the vehicle floor and the platform of around 20 cm.

Occasional freight traffic will still take place on the route in 2015. Depending on requirements, the industrial connection in the Feucht industrial area is served with the 294 series in the late evening hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Between August 19 and September 10, 2018, the tracks between Feucht and Ludersheim were renewed. A total of 3.5 million euros will be invested.
