The Finspång – Norsholm railway was a narrow-gauge railway between Finspång in Östergötland and Norsholm on the Östra stambanan in Sweden . It had a track width of 891 mm and was built by Finspång – Norsholms Järnvägsaktiebolag (FNJ).

history

Patron Carl Edvard Ekman , factory owner in Finspång , soon realized that an extension of the Pålsboda – Finspång railway line, inaugurated on September 19, 1874, to a suitable location on the Östra stambanan would bring advantages. He therefore campaigned for an expansion of the existing route.

The board of directors of Pålsboda – Finspång Jernvägsaktiebolag , however, had concerns that such a route would detract traffic from the previous route and rejected this connection route. Perhaps it was expected that this new rail line would finance itself and then work with the PFJ.

Despite the lack of interest from the PFJ, Ekman continued planning on his own. He had a route north of Lake Glan and on to Norrköping investigated. However, it turned out that the city of Norrköping had little interest in this variant. In their place a route was planned south of the Glan via Doverstorp, Skärlacka and Kimstad to Norsholm with a connection to the Göta Canal and the Norsholm – Västervik – Hultsfred railway.

Finspång – Norsholms Järnvägsaktiebolag

As a result, a new joint stock company, Finspång – Norsholms Järnvägsaktiebolag , was formed, in which Ekman owned almost all of the shares. P. Pettersson was commissioned by the Road and Waterways Authority ( Väg- och vattenbyggnadskåren ) to plan, estimate and build the new route . The cost was estimated at 1.131 million crowns. A crossing with the Östra stambanan in Kimstad was planned , with the Royal Railway Administration and the Roads and Waterways Authority giving preference to a connection in Norsholm . Despite official concerns, Pettersson's proposal was accepted with the connection in Kimstad.

The license was granted on September 1, 1882, and on May 11, 1883, a government loan of 500,000 crowns was approved. The founding meeting of Finspång – Norsholms Järnvägsaktiebolag (FNJ) took place on September 28, 1883. The rails on the line were made of steel and weighed 17.2 kilograms per meter.

Two steam locomotives were procured for operation :

2 ROXES Tank locomotive 1 B t Nydqvist & Holm, Trollhättan 198

later NÖJ No. 6, 1919 to Spitzbergen, retired in 1939

On October 1, 1885, the new, 27-kilometer Finspång – Norsholms Järnväg (FNJ) was opened to general traffic. The final construction cost was 1,163,943 crowns. Six two-axle passenger coaches and 47 freight wagons were purchased for operation. More vehicles were not procured because a corresponding agreement with Pålsboda – Finspångs Järnväg made it possible to manage the two routes jointly.
