Eider ferry to Tönning

The Heide – Karolinenkoog railway was a railway line in Schleswig-Holstein that connected the Dithmarsch district town of Heide via Weddingstedt with the Karolinenkooger Eider ferry . A few kilometers of the route north of Heide are now part of the Heide – Büsum railway .

In the Inselbahnhof of Heide it branches off from the march line , which is crossed under after leaving the station.

In Karolinenkoog there was a connection to Tönning with a steam ferry .

The route can still be clearly recognized in satellite images due to its dead straight line.

On part of the route, the expanded federal highway 5 runs today between the end of the A 23 motorway at Heide -West von Hemme to the Eider Bridge at Tönning .

Operation and history

Eider ferry to Tönning offered connection

The Heide – Karolinenkoog line was opened together with the Neumünster – Heide line on August 22, 1877. The Westholsteinische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft was the builder and operator .

On November 1, 1878, the Wesselburen – Heider railway company opened a branch from Weddinghusen to the city of Wesselburen and in 1883 to Büsum (from November 1, freight traffic, from November 15, also passenger traffic) - that line still exists today ( Heide – Büsum railway line ) .

On June 1, 1886, the Karolinenkoog – Karolinenkoog Eider ferry section was opened. From there a steam ferry ran to Tönning for both passengers and goods.

The Westholsteinische Eisenbahngesellschaft took over the operation from the beginning, which on July 1st, 1890 in the Prussian State Railways .

The line to Karolinenkoog only survived until January 20, 1940. On that day the last train drove to the Karolinenkooger Landing Bridge, which was bombed the next day. On November 1, 1942, the passenger service to Hemmerwurth was shortened, and when the timetable changed on May 23, 1954, passenger traffic to Weddinghusen was withdrawn. Goods traffic to Hemmerwurth ended on the last day of 1958. Until April 30, 1968, there was still goods traffic to Weddinghusen.
