The Heide – Büsum railway is a railway line in the Dithmarschen district in Schleswig-Holstein , which connects the district town of Heide with the North Sea resort of Büsum .

geography

The route runs from the Inselbahnhof Heide as a continuation of the Neumünster – Heide railway line, initially parallel to the march line through the flat Geest landscape . At the level of the Weddinghusen district of the Weddingstedt municipality , it crosses under the Marschbahn. The most important stop on the way is the small town of Wesselburen . The Büsum train station on the North Sea is mainly used by tourists.

history

The Weddinghusen – Wesselburen line was opened on November 1, 1878 by the Wesselburen – Heider Railway Company as a branch of the Karolinenkoog – Heide – Neumünster line, which has existed since 1877. The extension of this branch line to Büsum was released for freight traffic on November 1, 1883. From November 15, 1883, passenger traffic was also operated there. The company was taken over from the start by the West Holstein Railway Company , which on April 1, 1881, bought the Wesselburen company. The West Holstein Railway Company was merged with the Prussian State Railway on July 1, 1890 .

AKN train at Jarrenwisch

Around Wesselburen there was an extensive network of narrow-gauge railways for the removal of agricultural goods, which were then transported in the direction of Heide ( Wesselburener spur railways , gauge 750 mm). A 2.5 km long Spalding Railway (gauge 600 mm) ended at Osterhof station .

In the late 1950s, in addition to passenger trains, a pair of express trains ran the route from Büsum via Heide and Neumünster to Eutin . In the 1980s, the use of uneconomical train sets ( V 100 with n-car - control car ) contributed to the interim decline of the line.

Büsum train station

Since then, all sidings have been removed from the stops on the Heide – Büsum route and the stations have been converted into stops .

Büsum harbor railway

From November 5, 2000, after winning the tender, the line was operated by Schleswig-Holstein-Bahn GmbH, a subsidiary of AKN Eisenbahn AG (Altona-Kaltenkirchen-Neumünster Eisenbahn). In the course of the associated introduction of the hourly service between Heide and Büsum, the Osterhof and Haferwisch stops were closed.

After the AKN also won the tender on the Neumünster – Heide railway line in 2003 , the two are listed under a common timetable number. Most of the trains coming from Neumünster are tied to Büsum. LINT 41 multiple units are used as vehicles .

Since the timetable change in December 2011, NBE nordbahn Eisenbahngesellschaft mbH & Co. KG , a joint subsidiary of AKN Eisenbahn AG and BeNEX GmbH, has been serving the route. These trains, too, are usually tied through to Neumünster.

There are currently no more freight trains, as freight traffic was officially suspended on February 28, 1994. However, the Büsum port railway is reserved for possible future use.
