The Königswalde – Annaberg-Buchholz ob Bf railway was a branch line in Saxony that was used almost exclusively for freight traffic . The short train began at Königswalde ob Bf (Erzgeb) station on the Vejprty – Annaberg-Buchholz and Bf railway and led to Annaberg-Buchholz ob Bf.

history

Preliminary planning

As early as 1892, a train station in the upper part of Annaberg was required for the first time in order to avoid the cumbersome transports through the city from the lower train station to the factories there. The then proposed narrow-gauge railway from Schönfeld to Precipitation was rejected by the Saxon state parliament. Later, the manufacturers favored a standard-gauge industrial railway from Königswalde ob Bf, which should primarily serve the coal traffic from Bohemia. With the decree No. 32 of March 12, 1902, such a railway was finally approved.

Operating time of the railway line

Kleinrückerswalde, railway bridge (2016)

On December 5, 1904, work began on the new line. The route largely followed the old, no longer needed Upper Floßgraben , which was filled in and made usable as a railway body. A three-span steel girder bridge had to be built near Kleinrückerswalde, otherwise the new route managed without any further engineering structures. It was opened on August 1, 1906.

In the time of need at the end of the First World War , travel was carried out. Between July 25, 1917 and June 1, 1921, a third-class passenger wagon was added to the scheduled freight train.

On March 14, 1927, travel began again for a short time. This was used in particular for rush hour traffic to the new AEG plant , where a works platform was set up. A little later, faster bus routes took over this traffic. It was not until the end of the Second World War - from July 3, 1944 - that passenger trains ran again to the AEG plant to bring in compulsory workers from Bohemia.

After the Second World War, the route was initially well used by uranium ore transports from Wismut AG . When this ended at the end of the 1950s, consideration was given to closing the line for the first time. Ultimately, however, the entire coal handling for the Annaberg district was concentrated at the upper station, which again ensured a constant transport volume for the route. The loading stations in Cunersdorf and Kleinrückerswalde were closed in 1955.

It was not until the political change in eastern Germany in 1989/90 that the transport performance decreased drastically. Freight traffic was officially stopped on May 1, 1995.

On October 1, 1996 the line was closed. In the area of the former AEG connection, 400 meters of track were dismantled as early as 1995 and used to rebuild the upper section of the Pressnitz Valley Railway . The tracks in the upper station of Annaberg-Buchholz were dismantled in summer 2000, after which a commercial area was created on the site. A year later, the line between km 5.0 and the terminus was dismantled by the “IG Preßnitztalbahn eV”.

Reuse

Dismantled KA route near Königswalde (Erzgeb) above Bf (2016)

In 1999 the BVO Bahn GmbH announced that the narrow-gauge railway Cranzahl-Kurort Oberwiesenthal operated by it is to be expanded in the future via the "upper railway" into the urban area of Annaberg-Buchholz. A three-rail track would have been necessary between Cranzahl and Königswalde (Erzgeb) above Bf . In Königswalde (Erzgeb) ob Bf , the planned extension of the narrow-gauge railway would have turned into the route of the KA line via a connecting curve, which would have been reactivated up to the level of the former AEG stop. Ultimately, this project failed due to funding.

From September 2008 until the opening in October 2009, the route between Annaberg-Buchholz and the intersection of the route with the state road 265 east of Cunersdorf was expanded into a cycle path. In 2016, the route was also paved up to the tree line in the direction of Königswalde (Erzgeb) ob Bf .

Route description

Cunersdorf, former level crossing Annaberger Straße with Pöhlberg (2016)
Kleinrückerswalde, railway bridge with cycle path (2016)

The railway line to Annaberg-Buchholz ob Bf had its starting point at km 5.9 of the Weipert - Annaberg-Buchholz railway line and Bf . It branched off at the northern exit of the Königswalde (Erzgeb) ob Bf station and ran on the apex of the ridge between the Pöhlbach - and the Sehmatal to the north in the direction of Annaberg. From the starting point of the route to the area of today's garbage dump "Himmlisch Heer" the route ran on the filled in Annaberg raft ditch .

The Cunersdorf charging station was reached at 1.7 km near the “Morgensonne” restaurant belonging to Cunersdorf . Directly behind the station, the railway line crossed “Annaberger Straße”, which connects Cunersdorf with Königswalde. In this area, federal road 95 runs parallel to the route to the terminus . In the area of today's garbage dump "Himmlisch Heer" the route left the Annaberg raft ditch. A memorial plaque reminds of the moat that was once important for the Annaberg mining industry.

The only bridge on the route was reached in Kleinrückerswalde at km 4.001. Shortly afterwards, the Kleinrückerswalde loading point was at km 4.11. The city limits of Annaberg were reached at km 5.0 of the railway line. Shortly after the “Alte Poststraße” level crossing, the only passenger stop on the route was located directly on today's B95 at km 5.02 with the Annaberg (Erzgeb) ob Bf (AEG platform) stop . After passing the station, a siding branched off to the "Electrical installation Annaberg (until 1945 AEG)".

After a further 800 meters, the end station Annaberg-Buchholz ob Bf was reached in an arc to the east at km 5.878 . It is located on the northwestern edge of the Pöhlberg .

Königswalde (Erzgeb) ob Bf (2016)

The Königswalde halt was opened on August 3, 1872 with the Weipert – Annaberg-Buchholz railway line . With the opening of the branch line to Annaberg-Buchholz ob Bf. In 1906, the station was expanded to become a train station. It had the following names:

  • until 1922: Königswalde
  • until 1928: Königswalde (Erzgeb)
  • since 1928: Königswalde (Erzgeb) above Bf (after the opening of the Plattentalbahn with Königswalde (Erzgeb) below Bf)

From 1906 to 1996 the branch line branched off from the station to Annaberg-Buchholz ob Bf; it was used almost exclusively for freight traffic. However, due to its great distance to the associated place Königswalde in the valley of the Pöhlbach , Königswalde (Erzgeb) ob Bf was never important in wagonload traffic. As the only signaling equipment on this railway line, Königswalde (Erzgeb) ob Bf had a single-winged lattice mast shape signal until it was closed . In September 1999, this has been rearranged and on the site of the former station Herold (Ore Mountains) in Thumer narrow gauge network set up.

Due to the low number of passengers, Königswalde (Erzgeb) ob Bf was abandoned on September 27, 1998. In the course of the renovation of the Königswalde (Erzgeb) section above Bf – Bärenstein (Kr Annaberg) in autumn 1999, the track system was dismantled and the track was moved across the former station area. Königswalde (Erzgeb) ob Bf is located in the southwest of the village on the slope of the Pöhlbachtal and can be reached via "Annaberger Straße" and "Bahnhofstraße". The reception building from 1906 is used as a private residence.

  • until 1911: Cunersdorf near Buchholz loading point
  • until 1933: Cunersdorf b Buchholz (Sa)
  • since 1933: Cunersdorf (b Buchholz / Sachs)

The Cunersdorf loading point, which was only used for goods traffic, had only one car body on high-rise buildings . It was in operation until 1955 and was then dismantled along with the side tracks. At the current location opposite the “Morgensonne” restaurant there is a free space. It is located directly at the intersection of the federal road 95 (Annaberg-Buchholz– Oberwiesenthal ) and the local connecting road Cunersdorf –Königswalde.

  • since 1911: Kleinrückerswalde

The Kleinrückerswalde loading point, which is only used for goods traffic, has only one car body on high-rise buildings . It was in operation until 1955 and was then dismantled along with the side tracks. The location is in the direction of Annaberg just behind the railway viaduct on the street "An der Jöhstädter Straße". There are no more railway witnesses at the site.

Annaberg (Erzgeb) ob Bf (AEG platform)

Former Location Annaberg (Erzgeb) above Bf AEG platform (2016)

The Annaberg (Erzgeb) ob Bf (AEG platform) stop was opened on March 14, 1927 for the workers of the AEG plant founded in 1926 , which was given a wooden works platform. The station at the entrance to the AEG plant did not have any high-rise buildings. It was the only passenger stop on the route that was exclusively available for the factory workers. A short time later, however, the works traffic was replaced by buses. It was not until the end of the Second World War - from July 3, 1944 - that passenger trains ran again to the AEG plant to bring in compulsory workers from Bohemia. The halt was abandoned at the end of the war in 1945.

The station is located between "Alten Poststraße" and "Ernst-Roch-Straße" directly on today's B95. The siding to the plant of the former electrical installation was dismantled in September 1995 by trainees of the Berlin S-Bahn and partly used as a museum train for the reconstruction of the upper section of the Preßnitztalbahn . The retaining wall made of stamped concrete on the left-hand side in the direction of Annaberg is the remainder of the former AEG platform.

Annaberg-Buchholz above Bf

Former Annaberg-Buchholz ob Bf site, today the Oberer Bahnhof industrial park (2016)

Annaberg-Buchholz ob Bf was opened as a loading point on August 1, 1906 and dedicated to the freight yard in May 1913. After the passenger station " Annaberg-Buchholz unt Bf " opened in 1866 in the Sehma valley, it was the city's second station. The station had the following names:

  • until 1911: Annaberg i Erzgeb loading point
  • until 1922: Annaberg (Erzgeb) Ladest
  • until 1949: Annaberg (Erzgeb) ob Bf
  • since 1949: Annaberg-Buchholz ob Bf (through the merger of Annaberg and Buchholz to Annaberg-Buchholz)

When the station opened in 1906, the station, then known as the Annaberg loading point, was given a small civil servants' residence. Due to the steadily growing freight traffic at what is now the upper station, a goods shed with service rooms was inaugurated on June 1, 1929, and the track systems and staff expanded. After Annaberg-Buchholz ob Bf was converted into a central transshipment point for coal in the Annaberg district in the 1960s , the station became of considerable importance for the city and the surrounding area.

As a result of the political change in 1989/90, there was a decline in the volume of goods in the early 1990s. The last scheduled freight train reached Annaberg-Buchholz ob Bf on December 30, 1994. The next day the station was closed before the entire railway line officially went out of service on May 1, 1995 and permanently on October 1, 1996. The tracks, masts, goods sheds and the loading road were removed in 2000 and the adjacent industrial wasteland was gradually demolished. The city of Annaberg-Buchholz, as the new owner, had the site developed as the "Parkstrasse / Oberer Bahnhof industrial park" so that no traces of the former development can be found today.
