The Karlberg / Tomteboda – Värtan ( Swedish Värtabanan ) railway is a standard-gauge electrified railway between the port of Värtan and the Karlberg and Tomteboda stations in Sweden . The route runs in the urban area of Stockholm .

history

Statens Järnvägar (SJ) opened the railway line between Karlberg and Värtan for all traffic on May 15, 1882, and the Tomteboda and Norrtull section, today's Stockholm Norra station, for freight traffic. Four years later, the route was extended to include the connection from Albano to Stockholms östra . This connected the route network from Stockholm – Roslagens Järnvägar to the rest of the Swedish network. This section was officially closed on June 1, 1969.

The six kilometer long Tomteboda - Värtan section was electrified on June 9, 1905 as a single-phase alternating current test operation with voltages between 5000 and 22,000 volts and a frequency of 25 Hertz under the direction of Robert Dahlander . For this purpose, the German Siemens-Schuckert-Werke and Westinghouse Electric , the latter in cooperation with the American Baldwin Locomotive Works , provided one electric locomotive each, while AEG provided the electrical equipment for two "motor vehicles" and two sidecars. The tests were part of a feasibility study for the electrification of the SJ's rail network. Detailed investigations of all components of the vehicles and the energy supply as well as the costs led to the conclusion that in the near future single-phase alternating current will prevail for electric rail operations. In 1908 the electrical operation was stopped again. The re-electrification with single-phase alternating current 15 kV 16 ⅔ Hz was commissioned on June 1, 1939.

passenger traffic

With the opening the passenger traffic to Värtan was started. These passenger trains were discontinued on April 15, 1913, only military personnel were carried by SJ until 1918. Since then, the line has been a pure freight railway .

Passenger traffic was only resumed in the mid-1980s; motorail trains with passenger coaches ran from Värtan to Norrland for a few years .

The port area and the tracks up to the banks of the Lilla Värtan , which separates Lidingö from Stockholm, have been expanded several times. In addition to the Värtahamnen, it includes the free port, the Loudden oil port and a container terminal.

Ferry traffic

Silja Line's car ferries to Finland have been departing from Värtahamnen since 1966 . Railway ferries ran to Nådendal from 1967 to 1976 and again to Åbo from 1989 . The railway ferry line between Åbo and Stockholm was closed at the turn of 2011/12.

Line speed

For a long time, the maximum speed on the route was only 40 km / h. In 2003 the route was repaired and since then it can be driven at 70 km / h. Automatic train control ( ATC ) was also installed.

In connection with the construction work on Norra länken , the maximum speed was reduced to 40 km / h.

After the completion of the construction work on the road transport connection, the railway line is to be relocated in a tunnel, which is to be completed in 2017.
