Giuseppe Berardi

Giuseppe Berardi (born September 28, 1810 in Ceccano , † April 6, 1878 in Rome ) was a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Berardi earned a doctorate in civil and canon law in 1837. Although he was an auditor at the Apostolic Chamber , he did not initially belong to the clergy - he was married and had a daughter. During the revolution of 1848 he accompanied Pope Pius IX. into exile in Gaeta . The Pope appointed him Apostolic Pro-Legate in Velletri on September 1, 1849, and the next year he appointed him Apostolic Protonotary. From 1851 to 1859 Berardi was a substitute for the Vatican State Secretariat . In 1861 he became a consultor to the Holy Office . Giuseppe Berardi was friends with the later Saint Giovanni Bosco and contributed to the fact that the Pope recognized his order in the church in 1874. In 1862 Pius IX sent him. to Russia to start talks there about the establishment of a nunciature. Berardi had to leave, however, unsuccessfully.

After he was ordained a priest on March 19, 1862 , Pope Pius IX appointed him. on April 7 of the same year titular Archbishop of Nicaea . The episcopal ordination donated him on November 8, 1863 Cardinal Costantino Patrizi Naro . In the consistory of March 13, 1868 Pius IX took him. as cardinal priest of Santi Marcellino e Pietro in the College of Cardinals . In the same year he became pro-minister for trade and public relations, which he remained until 1870. From 1869 to 1870, Berardi, considered moderate, took part in the First Vatican Council . After the death of Pius IX. Cardinal Berardi took part in the conclave in 1878 and died a few months later. He was buried in the Campo Verano cemetery in Rome.
