The Baihetan Dam ( Chinese  白鶴 灘 大壩  /  白鹤 滩 大坝 , Pinyin Báihètan Dàbà ) is a large dam that is currently under construction with a hydropower plant on the Jinsha Jiang (Chinese name for the upper reaches of the Yangtze River ), in the provinces of Sichuan and Yunnan in the southwest of China . The structure will be one of the highest dams on earth; and, when completed, it could potentially become the third largest in China and fourth largest in the world by volume. Preparations for the construction work have been underway since 2010; the building is scheduled to be Template: future / in 2 yearsfinished in 2021–2022 .

The total installed capacity of the hydropower plant should be around 16,000  MW . This will make it the second largest hydropower plant in the world after the Three Gorges Dam and in front of Itaipú (see list of the largest hydropower plants in the world ).

Around 67,000 people have to be relocated for the project.
