The construction of the Xiangjiaba dam on the border between the provinces of Sichuan ( Yibin ) and Yunnan ( Shuifu ) in China began on November 27, 2006. The dam was built on the Jinsha Jiang ("golden sand river"; Chinese name for the upper reaches of the Yangtze River ) about 1000 kilometers upstream of the famous Three Gorges project . The commissioning took place in 2014. Its main purpose is the generation of electricity from hydropower; a hydropower plant with 6448  MW is planned for this. The electrical energy obtained in this way is transmitted via specially built HVDC Xianjiaba-Shanghai to the greater Shanghai area 2000 km away . This is the second project on this river besides the Xiluodu Dam , which began a year earlier. It is one of the most powerful hydropower plants in China.

Construction and operation

Construction of the 161 meter high and 909.26 meter long gravity dam began in 2008. The hydropower plant has been under construction since 2009. In May 2011, the first turbine runner was delivered, with which 812 MW can be generated. The impeller weighs 406 tons, has a diameter of 10.5 meters and a height of 4.7 meters. The first generator units were completed in July 2012.

The water in the dam has been dammed since October 2012. Within a week, the water level should rise from 280 meters to 354 meters. The water flow stabilized at 15,000 cubic meters per second. Just six hours after the water storage began, the level in the Three Gorges Reservoir fell by 4 centimeters.

With one of the world's longest HVDC overland connections, the electricity generated is transmitted from the hydropower plant to Shanghai , which is over 2,000 kilometers away . The line was put into operation in 2010 after a 30-month construction period.

Other purposes of the dam are: flood protection, irrigation, shipping and retention of mud and sediment.

The project is expected to cost approximately $ 6.3 billion in total. According to the FAZ, the total costs for all four dams will be 200 billion yuan (24 billion euros).

Effects on humans and the environment

For the reservoir , 88,000 to 118,000 people should be relocated. The local government reported 40,100 people in Suijiang County . There were six cities in the area in which the reservoir was to be built. In March 2012 there were five days of mass protests over the resettlements. The residents did not want to sign the compensation agreements because they believed their land and homes were undervalued. Over 2,000 people then blocked the main access roads to the district, resulting in food shortages. The first attempt to convince the protesters to completely dissolve the blockade failed. Most recently, more than 400 police officers were used to persuade about 300 demonstrators who continued to block an intersection and bridge to break off the protests. Public order was restored after 5 days.

In June 2010, more than 250 villagers lost their homes due to a landslide near the dam. According to the local authorities, the landslide was due to the construction of a road above the village. However, residents reported that the number and danger of the landslides had increased significantly since construction began on the dam.
