Grappler Baki ( Japanese グ ラ ッ プ ラ ー 刃 牙 Gurappurā Baki ) is a manga series by Keisuke Itagaki , which was continued several times and adapted as an anime . She's in the genres of sports , action and Shonen classify and deals with the career of the young fighter Baki Hanma .

More than 65 million copies of the work were sold by 2018.

The story revolves around a boy named Baki Hanma ( 範馬 刃 牙 ) and his challenge to become the strongest fighter in the world. His father Yūjirō Hanma ( 範馬 勇 次郎 ) has so far held this title . Baki's mother Emi Akezawa ( 朱 沢 江 珠 ), whose recognition he is striving for, also wants her son to become the strongest and one day be able to defeat his father. To do this, she sends him to many trainers of various martial arts and lets street fighters compete against Baki. In this way, the 15-year-old always encounters new challenges.

The manga was published in Japan from 1991 (issue 43/1999) to 1999 (issue 29/1999) in the manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Champion published by Akita Shoten . The chapters were also summarized in 42 anthologies ( Tankōbon ). Between 2003 and 2004 a new edition was published in B6 format in 15 volumes, and another in larger A5 format between 2007 and 2008 in 24 volumes. 1999 appeared with Grappler Baki Gaiden ( グ ラ ッ プ ラ ー 刃 牙 外 伝 ) a series of short stories, which were also summarized in one volume.

The manga was continued in Baki , which appeared in the same magazine from 1999 (issue 43/1999) to November 24 (issue 52/2005). The work comprises 31 volumes. A new edition of B6 was published in 12 volumes between 2006 and 2007. In 2002, Baki Tokubetsuhe Saga ( バ キ 特別 編 SAGA ) also appeared in Young Champion magazine, also with further short stories with later a volume.

From December 1, 2005 (issue 1/2006) followed the second sequel with the title Hanma Baki , also in Shōnen Champion , which was completed on August 16, 2012 (issue 38/2012) with 37 volumes. The first two of the five story arcs were given a new B6 edition in 2009 in five volumes. An extra volume called Hanma Baki 10.5 Gaiden Pikuru ( 範馬 刃 牙 10.5 外 伝 ピ ク ル ) was released on January 8, 2008.

The fourth part Baki-dō was published from March 20, 2014 (issue 16/2014) to April 5, 2018 (19/2018) and is completed with 22 volumes.

The first series appeared in English in Raijin Comics magazine in the United States and Canada. Ever Glory Publishing brought it out in Taiwan. Delcourt brought out the first sequel in French.

Spinoffs

In 2005, the spin-off Baki Gaiden - Scarface ( バ キ 外 伝 疵 面 - ス カ ー フ ェ イ ス - ) by Yukinao Yamauchi was published , which initially ran until 2007 in Champion Red magazine , then briefly in 2009 in Weekly Shōnen Champion and most recently from 2014 to 2015 in sister magazine Bessatsu Shōnen Champion . The chapters have been summarized in seven edited volumes.

In the Bessatsu Shōnen Champion ran from 2012 to 2014 Baki Gaiden Sōmen ( バ キ 外 伝 創面 ) also by Yukinao Yamauchi with later three volumes.

Baki Gaiden Kenjin ( バ キ 外 伝 拳 刃 ) by Kengō Miyatani was moved to Champion Red from 2013 and came on a tape in 2014.

A parody called Bakidomoe ( バ キ ど も え ) was drawn by Naoki Saitō and appeared from 2012 to 2015 on the website of the Weekly Shōnen Champion , in the magazine itself and in the Bessatsu Shōnen Champion . It has been summarized in three edited volumes.

Anime

Grappler Baki (OVA, 1994)

In 1994, the 45-minute original video animation Grappler Baki was released in Japan . Directed by Yūji Asada, who also wrote the script and did the storyboards.

The OVA was published by Manga Entertainment in Australia and the UK and broadcast in Arabic by space power.

Grappler Baki (series, 2001)

In 2001, an anime series for the first manga series was produced in Studio Group Tac , which comprises 24 episodes. The character design comes from Naoyuki Itō and the artistic direction was held by Minako Akaishi. The first season of Grappler Baki , directed by Hitoshi Nanba, was broadcast in Japan by TV Tokyo from January 8 to June 25, 2001 . A second season, Grappler Baki - Saidai Tournament-hen ( グ ラ ッ プ ラ ー 刃 牙 - 最大 ト ー ナ メ ン ト 編 - Gurappurā Baki - Saidai Tōnamento-hen ), directed by Katsuyoshi Yatabe, with a further 24 episodes aired on July 22, 2001.

The series was broadcast in Germany from April 11, 2012 on the pay-TV channel Animax with German synchronization. At the beginning of 2014 it ran on ProSieben Maxx's Friday evening program .

The series was also televised in English, Arabic and Tagalog, and was also translated into French.

Baki-dō (OVA, 2016)

The 14th volume of the Manga Baki-dō , published on December 6, 2016, was accompanied by a 15-minute DVD. This was created at Telecom Animation Film under the direction of Teiichi Takiguchi, who also did the character design.

Baki (series, 2018)

Studio TMS Entertainment adapted the second manga series in 2018 as an anime series directed by Toshiki Hirano with the character design by Fujio Suzuki.

The 26-episode series was first published on June 25, 2018 on Netflix Japan. On Japanese television it was broadcast on Tokyo MX a week later since July 2, 2018 , as well as on Sun TV , TVQ Kyūshū Hōsō , TV Aichi , KBS Kyōto and Hokkaidō TV with an offset of half an hour to a few days . Outside of Japan, Netflix plans to stream the series from autumn 2018.

For the 2001 television series, the music is from Project Baki. The opening credits were Ai Believe ( believe) in the first season and all alone in the second season, while the credits were Reborn and loved ... respectively. The pieces were sung by Ryōko Aoyagi.

In the 2018 television series, the music was composed by Kenji Fujisawa. However, the opening title Beastful comes from the rock band Granrodeo , the closing title Resolve was composed by Jon Kamita (guitarist of the band Penguin Research ), Miho Karasawa texted and sung by Azusa Tadokoro .
