Bala is a short documentary by Satyajit Ray from 1976 about the Tamil Bharatanatyam dancer Balasaraswati (1918–1984). The climax is a lyrical Varnam at the end of the film, which highlights her dancing qualities.
background
Ray first saw the dancer in Kolkata in 1935 . In 1966 he wanted to make a film about her, but did not get there until ten years later. Ray assessed the value of the film as purely historical - he captured rare film recordings of the dancer for future generations. Balasaraswati herself was shy about speaking English and refused to speak about her early life, as dancing was still equated with prostitution in higher Indian society at that time.
