Kapurush - The Coward ( Bengali কাপুরুষ Kāpuruṣ ) is a 1965 Indian film by Satyajit Ray .

action

The screenwriter Amitabha Ray breaks down his car in a small town. He is therefore taken by the tea plantation owner Bimal Gupta and accommodated for one night, as he enjoys company in the seclusion of the area. When they arrive at Gupta's house, Amitabha recognizes his former love, Karuna, in Gupta's wife. The evening entertainment is dominated by Bimal alone.

Karuna is reserved towards Amitabha, but when she comes into Amitabha's room, she reveals her dissatisfaction with her situation and both confess their still existing love for each other and make plans for a future together. It turns out that Amitabha used to shy away from marriage as a poor student, although she - coming from a rich family - had already objected to her family's objections to the relationship.

The next morning it was decided that Amitabha should take the train home, as the car repairs would take a long time, and that they would have a picnic on the way to the train station. During the drive, Amitabha briefly recalls how he met Karuna.

After the picnic, while Bimal is sleeping, Amitabha tries to persuade Karuna to leave her husband and go with him as he is ready now. She should come to the train station if she cares about him.

Amitabha has to wait a long time at the train station, when suddenly Karuna is still standing in front of him. His hope, however, is disappointed; she just wants her box of sleeping pills back that he accidentally took away.
