content

The film begins with a series of shots of caricatures by Sukumar Ray and the comment: There are few Bengalis who do not know these characters . The focus of the film is on three re-enacted dialogues from Sukumar's works Jhalapala , his Ramayana parsiflage and his Alice in Wonderland- inspired composition Ha-Ja-Ba-Ra-La .

background

Ray's documentary about his father was made in mid-1987 for the West Bengal government and was broadcast on Kolkata television on November 30th of that year, Sukumar's 100th birthday . Since Sukumar Ray died in 1923, there were no film recordings of him and Satyajit Ray was only dependent on family photos, illustrations and writings from his father.
