Balfourodendron riedelianum is a tree in the rhombus family from central to eastern and southern Brazil and from northern Argentina and Paraguay .

description

Balfourodendron riedelianum grows as a semi- evergreen tree to about 20–30 meters or a little more. The trunk diameter reaches about 50-100 centimeters. The smooth to slightly rough bark is grayish to gray-brown with many lenticels .

The opposite and long-stemmed leaves are threefold. The almost bare petiole is up to 8-12 centimeters long. The entire, rounded, pointed to pointed or more rarely rounded and leathery leaflets are obovate or elliptical, lanceolate. They are 5-13.5 inches long and 2.5-4.5 inches wide. The middle leaflet is the largest and slightly longer petiolate, the other two have short petioles. The leaflets are almost bare, only the veins are slightly hairy above and below. Domatia or black dots often appear on the underside of the leaflets .

Short to long and terminal, hairy, loose panicles , thyrses are formed. The white-yellowish or cream-colored and very small, only 2-3 millimeters large, usually four-fold, short-stalked flowers are hermaphroditic with a double flower envelope . There are each support and cover sheets available. The 4 free stamens are very short. The minimal calyx is hairy and four-lobed. The approximately 2.5 millimeters long petals are roughly egg-shaped. The above constant, weak hairy ovary is vierkammerig, -lappig, with short, bald stylus lobed with weak small scar . There is a lobed disc .

There are winged and orange- or yellow-brownish, leathery-woody, about 2.5-5.5 cm large wing nuts with four large, wide, papery wings. The ellipsoid, black seeds are up to 8–9 millimeters long and the seed coat is divided into Testa and Tegmen. Usually 4 or fewer seeds are formed per fruit.

Taxonomy

The first description of the Basionym Esenbeckia riedeliana and the synonym Helietta multiflora was made in 1878 by Adolf Engler in Fl. Bras. 12 (2): 142, 185, t. 39. The division into the genus Balfourodendron took place again in 1896 by Adolf Engler in HGAEngler & KAEPrantl, Nat. Plant family 3 (4): 174. Another synonym is Balfourodendron eburneum Mello ex Oliv.

use

The light, quite heavy but not durable and difficult to treat wood is known as Guatambú or Pau Marfim .
